SALISBURY – A man was injured Sunday when he fell off a moped near Gold Knob Road, and authorities say they found the driver hiding behind a tree.
Jeffrey Ashley, 51, of Faith Road in Faith, was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
Randy Gragg, 55, of Celestial Drive in Salisbury, was transported by ambulance to Rowan Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition Sunday night. Trooper J. Page with the N.C. Highway Patrol said he did not know the extent of Gragg’s injuries.
According to Page, Ashley was driving the moped with Gragg as his passenger. Just before 6 p.m. Sunday, the pair turned onto Mahaffey Drive off Gold Knob Road, where witnesses said they saw Gragg fall off the moped.
Witnesses reported that they saw the driver stop, gather a few things and then flee the scene, Page said. After hearing their descriptions of the man, investigators found Ashley behind a tree on the other side of a trailer down the road.
