CLEVELAND — Authorities have charged the driver of a Honda that slammed into a utility pole on Cool Springs Road this morning with driving while impaired.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Anthony Carpenter, Matthew Frizzell and his fiance Kelli Blake were injured when their 1998 Honda veered left off Cool Springs Road about 5:45 a.m.
The couple was trapped in the vehicle, Carpenter said. Both were taken to area hospitals.
Carpenter said Xanax pills were found in the car. The Honda was the only vehicle involved.
Frizzell, 23, was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A hospital spokeswoman said he was listed in critical condition.
Blake, 42, was taken by ambulance to Rowan Regional Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately available.
