SALISBURY — A Salisbury woman was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem on Wednesday afternoon after crashing her car into a utility pole on North Long Street near Chandler Concrete Co.
Ashley Nicole Perdue, 23, was trapped inside the vehicle for about five minutes while emergency crews worked to open the damaged door. She was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center before being flown out.
Salisbury Police Officer M.P. Benjamin said Perdue was traveling on Long Street toward East Spencer when she veered left of center in her Buick Skylark and hit the pole.
The accident, near the intersection of Park Avenue, happened about 3:45 p.m.
Benjamin said witnesses at the scene estimate Perdue’s speed as 5 mph above the posted limit of 35 mph.
“There is suspicion of impairment. That part is still under investigation,” he said.
There was no damage to the utility pole, but the car was totaled.
A hospital nurse supervisor at Baptist said Perdue was still being evaluated in the hospital emergency department Wednesday night, but she was listed in stable condition.
