Kneeling Gardeners
Michael Bradshaw and Robert Schwarzwaelder were featured guests at the June meeting of Kneeling Gardeners at Trinity United Church in Kannapolis. Michael presented a program on the history and habits of goldfinches, with tips for attracting them to one’s yard. Club chaplain Gail Puntch led devotions and Jill Roach, president, conducted business, sharing appreciation from the church for the flowers and thanked club members for planting them on the church grounds. Treasurer David Cherry gave the financial report. Members agreed to purchase a “Kneeling Gardener” bench to be placed in Village Park.
New officers for 2013 were voted in: president, Janet Smith; vice president/programs, Chris Wielandt; recording secretary/PR, Betty Walker; corresponding secretary, Brenda Trott; historian, Ann Rollins; treasurer, Judy Coggins; refreshment coordinator, Gail Puntch; chaplain, Nancy Rutledge; and photographer, Les Puntch.
Refreshments and decorations were provided by Doris Davis, Judy Goodnight, Carlotta Powell and Chris Wielandt. Kneeling Gardeners will meet next on Aug. 27 to plan for the upcoming year.

GQHS class of 1958
The Granite Quarry High School Class of 1958 celebrated its 54th reunion at Granite Lake Park on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Hot dogs, hamburgers and all the trimmings, along with desserts, were enjoyed by all.

CG Rotary news
During its regular weekly meeting on Tuesday, 26 June, Rotary District 7680 Governor-Elect Chris Jones of Cornelius, installed new officers for The China Grove Rotary Club.
New president Jenny White, principal of China Grove Elementary School, received the club gavel from out-going president Freda Richards. Stepping up to the president elect post was Michael Hanzlik who is the local financial advisor for Edward Jones. Chris Beaver, mathematics instructor at South Rowan High School, will continue as the club’s secretary-treasurer.
Jones empowered the new officers to carry out the Objects of Rotary and lead the club according to the Rotary Four Way Test. He also asked China Grove Rotarians to support the new officers and continue to provide Service Above Self—Rotary’s motto.
At the same meeting, plaques representing college scholarships were presented to Ms. Jan Sitterson, recent graduate of Jesse C. Carson High School and Mr. Jesse Chen, recent graduate of South Rowan High School.
Both winners amassed a total four year grade point average over 4.0. Sitterson has enrolled at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Chen will attend Western Carolina University at Cullowee. Each scholarship is worth $4,000 over a four year period.
Post 107 wins awards
RALEIGH — The American Legion Department of NC’s annual convention was held in Raleigh June 20-24 with posts from all over the state attending. The national commander was in attendance.
From Salisbury’s J.C. Price Post 107 commander Ollie Carroll and comrades Daniel Haddock, John Knox, Roy Leazer and Homer Robertson were in attendance. Mary Leazer and Debra Turnbull attended the Auxiliary convention.
Post 107 won the first place W. Coburn Alexander award for children and youth for outstanding services to children, and the first place Americanism award for excellent Americanism services to God and Country.
Commander Carroll serves as chairman of the Voluntary Hospital Committee and is a member of the Veterans affairs and rehabilitation Commission. Comrade Robertson was elected as District Commander; comrade Haddock is on the Boy Scouts committee and comrade Leazer has served on the Internal Affairs committee for ten years. Commander Carroll and comrade Leazer were selected Legionnaire of the Year by the Department of American Legion in 1992 and 2005 respectively, and comrade Abe Daniels was selected in 2008 as the Post Adjutant of the Year.
