Many of Rowan County’s most distinguished athletes have been running, jumping and throwing across the county lately as they compete in the Salisbury-Rowan Senior Games.
The games began in mid-April and continue through early May. The athletes hope to qualify for the North Carolina state finals this fall and the National Senior Olympics held every two years across the nation.
Among the games they’ve taken part in are track and field events such as the 100-meter dash, shot put and discus throw, along with tennis, golf, bocce, bowling and archery.
New in this year’s games are cornhole and bankshot basketball.
The games continue today with shuffleboard for men and women at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.
On Saturday, Ellis Park will host men’s bocce and women’s horseshoes.
The Warrior Golf Club will host a golf tournament Tuesday.
On May 4, basketball shooting, badminton and swimming competitions will take place at the Hurley Y on Jake Alexander Boulevard.
And on May 10, the games wrap up with a steak dinner at the Salisbury Civic Center. The dinner is free for games participants and $10 apiece for guests. For reservations to the dinner, or to learn more about the games, call 704-216-7780.
