Trey Holmes (East Rowan) finally got his Rawlings Gold Glove. Holmes won the award his sophomore year at Pitt Community College in 2010. The trophy finally arrived at Pitt recently, and Pitt coach Tommy Eason personally delivered it to the Holmes family.
The first baseman earned that Gold Glove for recording 360 putouts and 12 assists in 54 games — while making no errors.
Holmes recently finished one of the winningest baseball careers in local history. He played on varsity teams that went 83-12 at East; played on the 2009 Rowan Legion team that won state and regional championships and reached the World Series; played on the Pitt CC team that competed in the Division I Junior College World Series, and played on Appalachian State’s best team in a generation.
Holmes also was a summer all-star in the wood bat Coastal Plain League for Asheboro.
Local golf
In the Carolinas Junior PGA Championship being held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Eric Edwards shot 77-72 — 149 and is tied for 18th after two rounds. Alex Lee shot 79-81 — 160. Logan Shuping shot 84-77 — 161.
The McCanless Couples played with a four-man Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
The winning team was Treva Honeycutt, Tim Earnhardt, Amber and Howard Reeder.
Coming in second was the team of David Huneycutt, Ricky Honeycutt, Harry Owens and Don Goodnight. Longest putt on No. 8 was won by Treva Honeycutt.
Minor leagues
Keenyn Walker had two triples and four RBIs to lead the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 9-3 win at Rome on Sunday.
Junior Legion playoffs
Rowan County and the Mooresville Moors were the top two teams in the Southwest Division, and Carson also made the eight-team Area III playoffs as a wild card. Rowan’s Juniors open tonight at home against Western Forsyth, while Carson plays at Thomasville.
