GRANITE QUARRY — Fire crews were called in after a controlled burn in a debris-filled lot got out of control Thursday afternoon.
Crews were dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. to the 200 block of English Street off of Brown Acres Road.
Rowan County Forest Ranger David Poole said about a quarter of an acre was burning when firefighters arrived. About a half of an acre was affected in the fire.
Poole said the initial priorities were the two homes that sat adjacent to the smoldering lot.
“First and foremost is life and property,” Poole said.
Firefighters surrounded the brush fire and began extinguishing the perimeter.
Poole said the high temperatures and lack of rain was a concern as the fire burned away from the road and into the tree line.
“The key here is the wind wasn’t blowing,” he said.
After about an hour, crews knocked the fire down. They then sprayed it with Class A foam, a form of flame retardant fluid that breaks down faster than water.
Granite Quarry Fire, Rockwell Rural Fire, Union Volunteer Fire and the Granite Quarry-Faith Police assisted in the fire.
