Area sports briefs: Rowan falls on road

Eastern Randolph broke a 4-4 tie with a five-run fifth inning and held on for a 10-7 win over visiting Rowan County in Ramseur on Sunday.
ER took an early lead in the non-division game before Rowan (6-3) tied it at 3-3 in the third on Will Sapp’s single, his steal of second, and Brian Bauk’s RBI groundout.
Down 4-3 in the fifth, Avery Rogers scored on a Chase Hathcock double. But Eastern had its big inning and Rowan never recovered.
Justin Evans pitched five innings, allowed 10 hits and took the loss. Freshman reliever Heath Mitchem pitched the last three frames, giving up just one run and fanning three.
First-place Rowan returns to division action tonight against second-place Kannapolis at NW Cabarrus High.
Local golf
The pairing of Thad Sprinkle-Eric Mulkey won the Championship Flight of the 48th Annual Grady B. McCanless 4-Ball Championship on Sunday. Sprinkle and Mulkey topped Ronnie Eidson-Keith Dorsett 4 and 3.
In the Championship Flight consolation match, Kevin Lentz-Jason Barnhardt defeated Drue Davis-Brian Jones 2 and 1.
Kevin McMillan-Derek Paschal won the First Flight, beating Derek Lipe-Ty Roten 2 and 1. Jerry Wright-Ben Stolsworth won the consolation match, topping Logan Shuping-Bryson Sprinkle 3 and 2.
Matt Swaringen-Caleb Barnhardt won the Second Flight, topping Ryan Burke-Joseph Cress 6 and 5. Jordan Shepherd-Jake Kennedy beat Marcus Butcher-Clay Stevens 9 and 8 in the consolation.
Roger Lyerly-Nick Lyerly edged Andy Lombard-Trey Ledbetter 1-up to win the Third Flight.
Steve McIntrye-Robin McIntyre won the Fourth Flight, beating Dale Plummer-Jeff Shirley in 19 holes.
Treva Honeycutt-Rick Honeycutt won the Fifth Flight in a marathon, beating Alan Lambert-Josh Vinson on the 21st hole.
Joe Darnell-Collin Darnell won the Sixth Flight with a 1-up win against Howard Reeder-Brian Ritchie.
Closest to the pin winners were Thad Sprinkle on No. 6 and Brian Ritchie on No. 10.
Qualifying medalists with a 59 were Michael Swaringer-Chris Williams.
The Sunday Couples group at McCanless played a nine-hole, four-person Captain’s Choice event on Sunday.
Don Goodnight, Steve Chisholm, Harry Owen and David Huneycutt took first place. Closest to the pin on No. 10 was Tim Earnhardt.
Prep softball
South Stanly’s softball team matched the baseball’s team state title.
The Rowdy Rebels Bulls rolled 9-2 against Camden in the decisive game of the 1A state championship series on Sunday in Raleigh.
Steely Russell pitched a four-hitter and was named MVP. Erin Thompson had three hits.
Sophomore Meredith Burroughs hit her 18th and 19th homers of the season to lead Pikeville Aycock to a 7-2 win against Fred T. Foard on Sunday in the deciding game in the 3A championship series in Raleigh.
Burroughs, the MVP, tied the state record for homers in a season.
Youth basketball
The Kannapolis Komets high-school division team swept the Stanly Elite at South Stanly.
The Komets staged a big comeback in the first game after trailing by eight late. Alleson Briggs (Concord) led the Komets to a four-point victory. The Komets rolled 42-25 in the nightcap, paced again by Briggs. Carson’s Katherine Barringer and Alex Allen dominated the glass and the Komets got stellar guard play from Gentry Grubb (North Stanly).
The Komets jayvee squad, coached by Justin Kuralt and Darin Waller, rolled to three wins over Statesville and Stanly teams. Mackenzie Rodgers, Kyla Downs, Brooke Waller and Atania Grant paced the Komets.

Youth track
The Hurley YMCA Warriors competed at Ledford over the weekend.
Top-three finishers earned medals, while places 4 through 8 received ribbons.
Parker Westbrook (Hurley Elementary) was eighth in the 800 (3:16) in the 9-10 division and third in the 1500 (6:37).
Aubree Cain (Hanford Dole) was third in the 1500 (6:28) in the 11-12 division.
Lauren Dorman (Kannapolis) was fifth in the 1500 (7:10) in the 11-12 division.
Andrew Burgess (Southeast Middle) won the 800 (2:25) in the 11-12 division and also won the 1500 (5:09).
Alex Trexler (Lexington) was fifth in the discus (55 feet, 8 inches) in the 11-12 division.
Julianna Evans (Southeast) was eighth in the 800 (3:03) in the 13-14 division and took second in the 1500 (6:15).
Kaitlyn Trexler (Lexington) took third place in the discus (70-6) in the 13-14 division.
Lindsay Dorman (Kannapolis) was fourth in the 1500 (6:50) in the 13-14 division.n Emmeri Cain (North Rowan Middle) was sixth in the discus (36-8) in the 13-14 division and eighth in the shot (20-4).
Alex Crook (Lexington) placed first in the 800 (2:13) and also won the 1500 (4:41) in the 13-14 division.
Jonah Evans (Southeast) was third in the 1500 (5:45) in the 13-14 division.
Christa Landy (West Rowan) was third in the 100 (12.73 seconds), fourth in the 200 (25.98) and third in the 400 (1:01) in the 17-18 division.
Next is the AAU district qualifier in Cornelius. Top-16 finishers will advance to a national qualifier in Charlotte.
