ROCKWELL — Authorities arrested a 33-year-old man Thursday night after deputies said the smell of barbecue tipped a woman off that her son-in-law had been looking through her bedroom window.
Tony Dean McDaniel, of Cannon Street, is accused of peeping through the woman’s window on Lavista Drive Wednesday night.
He was caught after his mother-in-law smelled the familiar barbecue smell of a restaurant where McDaniel works, deputies said.
According to a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office report, the woman also saw McDaniel’s vehicle in the driveway and called for help.
Deputies found evidence near the window that a man had been there, the report said.
A neighbor told deputies he confronted McDaniel before he left and got a tag number from the car.
A similar incident had happened before, the woman told officers, so she set up a surveillance camera prior to Wednesday’s incident.
Images of the suspect were taken from the camera, the report said.
An officer spoke with McDaniel at his home, the report said, and McDaniel initially denied being at his mother-in-law’s home before admitting to watching the woman through her window.
McDaniel was charged Thursday night with secretly peeping into a room occupied by female.
He remained in jail Friday under a $1,000 bond.
