Area sports briefs: Erwin wins in semis

Erwin advanced to the championship game of the Rowan County Middle School Conference baseball tournament with a 10-5 semifinal win against West Rowan on Thursday.
Bryant Godsey had three hits and four RBIs for the Eagles, who rallied for six runs in the fourth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit.
Ike Freeman and Jordan Wise had two hits each. Addison Fry scored three runs and also was the winning pitcher in relief of Tanner File.
Erwin beat Southeast 13-3 in the opening round.
Fry and Wise had three hits each, while File, Freeman and Jackson Justus had two apiece.
Freeman and Geoffrey Lillywhite shared mound duties.
Top-seeded China Grove overpowered Knox 17-1 in a three-inning, first-round game.
Tyler Belk pitched a one-hitter and stuck out five.
Ryan Bearden had two hits, including a grand slam for the Red Devils (15-1). Dillon Norton had three hits, including a triple. Peyton Penninger had two hits, including a triple.
The tournament is being played at Mooresville Middle School. The championship game is Tuesday.
Middle school tennis
Erwin’s boys topped Mooresville 6-3 and earned first place in the conference with a 12-0 record.
Winners in singles were Chance Brown, Logan Shuping, Ike Emerson, Timmy Kane and Anthony Morrow.
Winners in doubles were Ben Rollins and Cooper Grubb.
Erwin topped Knox 8-1.
Winners in singles were Brown, Shuping, Emerson, Rollins and Robert Gray.
Winners in doubles were Tanner McNabb and Nick Pillsbury.
Knox had only five players, so two matches were forfeits.
College track
Livingstone female track star Quanera Hayes is competing in the Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Pueblo, Colo.
Hayes ran in the 400 prelims on Thursday night and ran 54.38. She had the fifth-best time and qualified for the final.
She’ll compete in the 200 today.
Livingstone’s Bryan Aycoth (West Rowan) has been named to the CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic first team.
Aycoth won three straight CIAA javelin championships and graduated May 5 with a 3.87 GPA. He was third in his class and graduated with a biology degree.
Shaw’s Loila Kienka (women’s tennis) and Christopher Copeland of St. Augustine’s (men’s track and field) were named the CIAA Scholar Athletes of the Year.
Prep soccer
The NCHSAA championships in girls soccer will be decided this weekend at N.C. State.
The 1A matchup is tonight at 7:30 p.m. Southwest Onslow (14-5-2) represents the East, while Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy of Mooresboro (18-4) represents the West.
Jefferson’s Anna Dedmon has scored 44 goals this season and 118 in her career.
The 4A championship will be decided Saturday at 11 a.m.
Cary Green Hope (25-0) represents the East, while Cornelius Hough (25-0-1) is the West representative.
Green Hope has outscored foes 124-9. Hough, a second-year school, has won its last 24 matches.
The 3A championship on Saturday is set for 2 p.m.
Jacksonville White Oak (22-2-2) represents the East and takes on West perennial power (25-1-1) Charlotte Catholic, which is in the final for the seventh time.
Jane Cline has scored 40 goals for Catholic, while Jodi Barber has scored 57 for White Oak.
The 2A title matchup is at 5 p.m. and is a rematch of the 2011 final. It pits East champ Carrboro (20-1-2) against Waxhaw Cuthbertson (20-4-1), which eliminated Salisbury in the first rond.
Carrboro’s Samantha Burch has scored 42 goals.
Admission is $8.
Prep softball
North Iredell let an early lead get away and fell 4-2 to Newton Fred T. Foard in the first game of the 3A West regional series on Thursday.
The teams play in Olin tonight.
South Stanly blasted Bessemer City 8-0 in the first game of the 1A West regional series.
Prep baseball
South Stanly dominated Hendersonville 11-1 in the first round of the 1A West regional series on Thursday.
Minor leagues
Winston-Salem’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) has a nine-game hitting streak and has boosted his batting average to .312.
Wagner was 1-for-3 in a 1-0 win against Salem on Thursday.
Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) drove in a run in Rome’s 4-3 win against Asheville on Thursday.
The Kannapolis Intimidators rallied from a 5-0 deficit and won 6-5 at West Virginia on Thursday.
Leighton Pangilinan and Grant Buckner had two RBIs each.
Local golf
In the EGolf Tour’s River Hills Classic being played at courses in Charlotte and Lake Wylie, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is 3-under after two rounds. Adams shot 68-72 — 140.
The cutline fell at 2-under. Will Collins (Salisbury) shot even-par for two rounds.
Physicals
South Rowan physicals will be given on May 29. Current Raiders should arrive at 5:30, while rising South freshmen should get physicals at 6.
