CHARLOTTE — The University of North Carolina at Charlotte now has a scholarship named for a Salisbury resident who is set to retire from the college in June.
The scholarship will be known as the Johnny R. Graham Scholarship Endowment in honor of Graham, professor of civil engineering in the department of civil and environmental engineering of The William States Lee College of Engineering at UNCC.
The new scholarship will initially be funded at $100,000 from which awards of $5,000 will be made annually in perpetuity from monies generated from this fund.
Scholarships will be awarded to veterans or family members of veterans in honor of Graham and in recognition of his combat service in Vietnam and his academic achievements with UNCC.
He has earned the highest teaching awards in the William States Lee College of Engineering at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels.
Graham is the author of 50 publications and has navigated the academic ranks through the highest level of full professor over his years with the university. He will now be awarded the title of professor emeritus which provides lifetime ties to UNCC.
Graham’s professional career involves time as a design engineer with an environmental consulting firm and as a management engineer in the construction industry.
He is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina.
Graham will retire June 30 with more than 28 years on the faculty of the department of civil and environmental engineering at UNCC. He lives with his wife, Anita, in Salisbury.
