From staff reports
Salisbury’s boys tennis team lost to C.D. Owen 5-4 in a 2A dual team state quarterfinal played in Black Mountain on Monday.
“It was a tough match that started on their courts, not hard courts, but outdoor carpet, and the ball was slower for us,” Salisbury coach Chris Stroupe said.
Rain pushed the match indoors, and there was a 10-minute delay during a power outage.
“A lot of on and off momentum,” Stroupe said.
State individual champ Michael Ogden won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Alan Lebowitz triumphed 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 at No. 2. Clint Comadoll prevailed 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5.
Ogden and Brock Overcash won 10-7 at No. 1 doubles.
There were several close losses. Abraham Post fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Overcash lost in a tiebreaker 6-4, 3-6, (10-5) at No. 4. at No. 6. Chris Derrick also lost in a tiebreaker — 5-7, 6-3, (10-1).
In doubles, Post-Lebowitz lost 10-4 at No. 2, and Derrick-Comadoll fell 10-7 at No. 3.
“Owen was a good team, and it’s OK to lose to a good team,” Stroupe said. “I hate our season’s over, but it was a great season.”
Salisbury finished 16-4.
Owen improved to 13-3 and will play either Shelby or Polk County in the Western final.
