A.L. Brown senior receives scholarship
CHARLOTTE — An A.L. Brown High School senior has received a $2,500 scholarship from a Charlotte-based law firm.
Dakota Palacio is one of 15 area students who have been awarded the Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship.
The students were judged on a number of criteria including the submission of a presentation or essay on the prevention of underage drinking and driving.
The program received a record number of applications this year and the selection committee was impressed with the quality of the presentations.
“Our scholarship program attempts to capture the ideas and suggestions of teenagers, because young adults respond best to advice from their own peers,” said Attorney Michael A. DeMayo, who has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships since founding the program in 2003. “It is our hope and objective to get the message out to as many teens as possible in our community because even if the scholarships save only one life, the investment will have been worth it.”

Area students recognized by Brevard College
BREVARD — Brevard College recently held its annual Honors and Awards Ceremony to honor student, faculty and staff achievement in academics and leadership.
In addition to the campus-wide honors and awards ceremony, students were also recognized during special events hosted by each of the college’s academic divisions.
The following students were recognized:
• Verntasia Finley of Kannapolis, a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership society.
• Dalton Johnson of Kannapolis received the Campus Life Outstanding Sophomore Student Award.
• Alexander Litaker of Salisbury, a member of the Beta-Beta-Beta national biological sciences honor society.
• Katelynne Poole of Salisbury received highest grade point average for health science studies and was recognized as a member of the Beta-Beta-Beta national biological sciences honor society.
Carson FCCLA advances to nationals
Members of Carson High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America recently participated in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) during the organization’s 2012 State Leadership Conference.
Savannah Crainshaw and Sierra Sacorro competed in the Focus on Children event.
Leslie Huffman and Ashley Marquez participated in the Interior Design event.
All received a Bronze medal in their respective event.
Kaylee Linthicum and Demi Bruce competed in the Chapter Showcase Display and will be able to advance to the National Competition level that will take place in Orlando Fla. this summer.
Throughout the year, FCCLA members tackle issues such as teen violence prevention, traffic safety, family issues, career exploration, and much more.
FCCLA programs and competitions enrich student learning, improve self-esteem, and serve students with a range of ability levels, economic situations, and cultural influences.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.

Hanford Dole accelerated reading
Elizabeth Hanford Dole Elementary School has been celebrating its accelerated reading program in which students accumulate points throughout the year and complete quarterly goals by reading books.
Students could pick a prize from the treasure box, get a book, have an ice cream party and eat with Principal Shanda McFarlin.
Another reward is to have lunch in the media center with a special person. The first person chosen was Mark Wineka, a reporter and columnist at the Salisbury Post. He answered questions about his job and the books he has written while conversing with the students.
The students attending this session were Lake Donaldson, Kayla Sachse, Gaokalia Yang, Tiana Turner, Charles Klinger, Malik Williams, Xavier Glover, John Hughes, G’Narius Weeks, Emily Harsell, Tamia Brown and Amelia Small. Wineka was impressed by the knowledge the students had in the importance of technology in communication.
The second guests were Detective Tyesha Harden and patrolman Mark McDaniel who relayed information about their professions and the importance of education in their careers. The students were especially interested in the items on the officers’ belts and the roles they play in catching criminals. They asked about the canine units, and how close the realities of their jobs come to the shows on television.

Spears wins scholarship
Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s School of Business & Technology recently held its annual honors reception on the Weatherford campus to recognize outstanding students in the school. Among the students winning awards was Patrick Spears of Salisbury, N.C., who won the Frank Polk Scholarship.
Johnson on dean’s list
LEXINGTON, Va. — Alee Johnson of Salisbury, N.C., a member of the class of 2015 at Washington and Lee University, has earned dean’s list status for the recently ended winter 2012 term.
Dean’s list status at Washington and Lee represents a term grade-average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.
Rowan Countystudent gets award at Mount OliveCollege
MOUNT OLIVE — William Alvin Camps III of Cleveland has received the William L. Warren Instrumentalist Award at Mount Olive College. Camps, a freshman music education major, is the son of William Camps Sr. and Angela Camps. He is a member of the Gospel Choir, Symphonic Band and the Percussion Ensemble at Mount Olive College.
The William L. Warren Outstanding Instrumentalist scholarship was begun in 1996 by Kathleen B. Warren in memory of her husband, William L. Warren, and is given to a student for outstanding instrumental music accomplishment. The recipient is selected by the music faculty.
