Area sports briefs: North Hills in playoffs

North Hills finished second in its conference tournament, losing to champion Hickory Christian 6-4.
The Eagles (6-15) qualified for the NCISAA 1A state tournament as a No. 14 seed and will play at No. 3 Wayne Country Day (12-8) on Friday at 4 p.m.
North Hills’ Leonard Murdock made all-conference first team and was fourth in league MVP voting.
Murdock batted .559 in 19 games with an on-base percentage of .623 and a slugging percentage of .847.
He had nine doubles and four triples, scored 26 runs and was 37-for-39 stealing bases.
Zach Byerly and Brandon Edds were named second team all-conference.
Prep baseball
As expected, North Rowan made the 1A playoff bracket as a wild card.
Recommended gametime is 7 p.m.
The Cavs got a favorable draw and will be on the road on Friday for the first round of the playoffs against Monroe Central Academy (6-12).
In 4A, Davie County is home against Butler.
In 3A, East Rowan is at home against Hickory Ridge; Carson is home against Parkwood; West Rowan is at Weddington, and South Rowan is at Marvin Ridge. Northwest Cabarrus is home against Northern Guilford.
Note that South’s game will be at 5 p.m., as Marvin Ridge does not have lights.
In 2A, Salisbury is at home against Piedmont.

Prep softball
North Rowan also received a wild-card berth for the 1A softball playoffs, although it got a tough draw on the road at West Wilkes (22-4).
First-round games are expected to be played on Friday.
In 3A, Carson is at home against Anson; East Rowan is at Weddington; West Rowan is at Marvin Ridge, and Northwest Cabarrus is at North Iredell.
In 4A, Davie is at Ardrey Kell.

Prep soccer
The soccer matches involving Salisbury, West Rowan and Carson were washed out on Wednesday. They’ll try to play tonight.
West is at home at 6 p.m. against Hickory Ridge.
A.L. Brown won its 3A playoff match on Wednesday, rolling 4-0 at Charlotte’s Berry Academy. The Wonders will play the winner of the West Rowan-Hickory Ridge match.
NPC club North Iredell was thumped 10-0 by Marvin Ridge on Wednesday in the 3A playoffs.

Prep tennis
The Maiden-Salisbury match was rained out for the second straight day. They’ll try again today at Salisbury to play their second-round match in the 2A dual team playoffs.
The Maiden-Salisbury winner will travel to Black Mountain to play Owen (12-3). Owen eliminated Cuthbertson 5-2 on Wednesday.

Middle schools
Baseball
China Grove clinched the Rowan County Middle School Conference championship with a 12-6 win against West Rowan on Tuesday.
Dillon Norton was the winning pitcher for the Red Devils (13-1), and Blake Johnson got the save.
Norton, Johnson and Austin Lear had 3 hits each, while Austin Corriher and Peyton Penninger had two.
China Grove plays Southeast at home on May 22.
Boys soccer
China Grove and Erwin battled to a 1-1 tie.
Gabriel Gomez scored for the Eagles and also was named as their player of the game.
Girls soccer
Erwin’s girls won 3-0 against China Grove. Kelby Porter scored twice, and Alana Miller had one goal. Miller was named player of the game.
YMCA sign-ups
Registration for T-ball and Coach Pitch has begun at the J.F. Hurley YMCA.
Registration runs until June 2.

The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan Branch, is accepting registration for its Summer Adult Basketball League. Registration will end on Saturday June 2. The league is limited to 12 teams.
League fees are $400 per team and numbered team jerseys are required.
The league will consist of 10 regular-season games, plus a tournament. Games will be played on Monday and Tuesday evenings starting June 11. Contact Joe Finney at 704-279-1742 or jfinney@rowanymca.org.
QM Racing
NCQMA Quarter Midget Racing will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Admission is free.
Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators will host Military Appreciation Day at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, at 4:05 p.m.
The Intimidators are offering reserved-level tickets – normally priced at $10 – for $4 when military ID is presented at the box office.
The Intimidators will be playing the Rome Braves.
A softball game between the Charlotte Firefighters Association Local 660 and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will follow.
The Intimidators are currently on the road. They’ll return May 17.
