SALISBURY — Rowan Regional Medical Center has been named a 2012 Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant recipient. As a two-time recipient, the Rowan Breast Health Center has been awarded a $60,000 grant to provide education, mammograms, ultrasound, MRI and biopsy to low-income, underinsured and uninsured women. We estimate as many as 100 women will benefit from this generous grant.
Rowan Regional opened the new Breast Health Center in May of 2011. The Rowan Breast Health Center is leading the fight against breast cancer using latest technology and a team of specialized experts including mammography technologists and radiologists who are board-certified and nationally accredited in mammography.
Jill McNeely serves as the nurse navigator for the breast health center. Nurse navigators, as part of a multidisciplinary team, are specially trained to educate and support patients and their families throughout their breast cancer treatment.
“As a breast health navigator, one of the biggest challenges I face on a weekly basis is the lack of funding for screening and diagnostic mammography,” she said. “When choosing between feeding your children or grandchildren and having a screening mammography there is no choice. This grant will eliminate that decision for many women. We are excited to partner with Susan G. Komen for the Cure — Charlotte Affiliate — to provide breast health education, screening and diagnostic tests for the women of Rowan County.”

Rae a new certified public accountant
SALISBURY — Sherry Bennett Rae is a new certified public accountant, according to the N.C. Board of CPA Examiners.
On April 24, the board approved 87 applicants for licensure as CPAs.
Applicants had to pass the Uniform CPA Examination and satisfy the work experience, education and moral character requirements of the board. North Carolina has more than 19,000 CPAs.

R3 Center offers programs for unemployed, under-employed
KANNAPOLIS — The R3 Center is offering numerous career development workshops and resumé clinics in May for adults in Rowan and Cabarrus counties. All of the programs are provided free-of-charge.
In May, the R3 Center will have several new workshops designed to allow people to reinvent their job search and begin career exploration.
“ ‘The POWER in Career Choice’ will be held at 6 p.m. on May 1. In this workshop, clients will learn about the main areas of employment in the energy industry,” said Keri Allman, director of the R3 Center. “You will also learn about the types of workers best suited for energy-related careers and how to determine if these areas are a good career fit for you.”
The workshop will feature R3 career staff and global energy technology (ET) visionary, Matt Sadinsky, CEO of PReP Intl (Prequalified Ready Employees for Power Intl) and cofounder of SOS Intl (System Operations Success Intl).
Additionally, the “Five Career Lessons from the Movie ‘Grease’ ” will be held at 6 p.m. on May 22. In this interactive workshop, your favorite characters from Rydell High will inspire a fresh look at your work search and career options.
Located at 200 West Ave., in Kannapolis, the R3 Center is a career development center established by Rowan-Cabarrus Community College to assist displaced workers, those who are unemployed or under-employed.

VantageSouth top SBA lender in state through February
RALEIGH — VantageSouth has been ranked as the No. 1 SBA (Small Business Administration) lender in the state by the SBA. The numbers, which were released in a report by the North Carolina SBA District Office in Charlotte, are as of the end of February.
According to the report, VantageSouth’s SBA lending volume production exceeded that of other community banks and larger banks in the state through the first five months of the SBA’s fiscal year.
SBA lending is a guarantee loan program aimed to help start-up and existing small businesses, and it is designed for credit-worthy borrowers who may have difficulty getting access to financing at reasonable terms.
There are five VantageSouth branches statewide. The SBA department is based out of the VantageSouth branch on East Innes Street in Salisbury, with its lending professionals operating across the state. Piedmont Community Bank Holdings Inc. is the majority shareholder of VantageSouth.
Magic Mart’s $3,149 goes to Shamrocks Against Dystrophy
SALISBURY — The Salisbury Magic Mart and its customers came together to raise $3,149 during the recent Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign.
Twenty-one Magic Mart locations in four states raised a total of $42,742 to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s research and services programs.
Funds raised by the Salisbury Magic Mart will help local individuals and families affected by muscular dystrophy and related diseases. The fundraiser helps to support the MDA’s work and a national network of more than 200 clinics.
It also pays to send thousands of children to MDA sumer camp.
“Magic Mart continues to come through in support of the MDA and muscle disease in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky,” said Roanoke, Va. fundraising coordinator Leslie Bauguss.

Horton recognized for 45 years with EnergyUnited
STATESVILLE — Jimmy R. Horton, a member of the EnergyUnited board of directors, has recently been recognized for 45 years of service to the electric cooperative.
Horton served on the board at Crescent Electric Membership Corporation beginning in 1966 and has been a member of EnergyUnited’s board of directors since it was formed by the consolidation of Crescent and Davidson EMCs in 1998. Horton served as president of the EnergyUnited board of directors from 1999-2011 and currently represents the cooperative’s third district. Salisbury is his hometown.
The commendable service awards were presented at the North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives’ annual meeting on April 19.
