LEXINGTON — Salisbury’s boys tennis squad had six qualify for the 2A Midwest region final Tuesday at the CCC championships at Bingham Tennis Center in Lexington Tuesday. The Hornets won first-place in both singles and doubles competition.
Freshman Michael Ogden didn’t fret under the big stage as he was the conference singles champion after defeating Central Davidson’s Levi Bruff 6-3, 6-1.
“It’s awesome,” Salisbury coach Chris Stroupe said. “For him as a 15-year old to come out under that pressure, he handled it very well. He’s an amazing player.”
In doubles play, Alan Lebowitz and Abraham Post defeated Matthew Fulbright/Daniel Dickens of Central Davidson 6-0, 6-0 in the championship.
Brock Overcash finished fifth in singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win against East Davidson’s Brad Hutchins. Overcash won his final three matches to qualify. The top five finishers in singles and doubles qualify for the regional.
Clint Comadoll and Christopher Derrick were third in doubles, defeating Central’s Collin Roundtree/Cory Lambeth 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
“I loved that all six of my guys made regionals,” Stroupe said. “My guys played their hearts out and today went really well.”
The 2A Midwest regional will be in Lexington next weekend. The first round of the dual-team playoffs will be May 1 with the Hornets likely hosting a first-round match.
