Shoutouts: Milby gets bowling scholarship

Published 12:00 am Thursday, April 19, 2012

Brittany Milby, 18, a senior at Salisbury High School, has become the first student in the school’s history to receive a full scholarship for bowling. Milby signed her scholarship papers April 2 to compete on the bowling team for Winston-Salem State University. Milby is also the first youth bowler from Woodleaf Lanes to receive a full bowling scholarship for college.
“Academically, I want to hold at least a 3.5 GPA,” said Milby, who intends to get her undergraduate degree in physical therapy and then go on to graduate school to study radiology. “Athletically, I just want to bowl the best I can. I know what my potential is. I just have to do it.”
Milby’s youth coach, Frankie Antonio Vann, expects her to flourish at the collegiate level.
“It’s been like a father and daughter relationship with her and I am extremely proud of her,” said Vann. “She’s got lots of potential.”
James and Susan Milby said they never expected bowling to carry their daughter this far in life. But they are both very proud of her accomplishments.
“She’s worked six years for this,” said Susan. “About three years ago she got serious about it and when she goes after it she usually gets what she wants.”

Fuller inducted into honor society
Alison Fuller, a third-year medical student, has been selected for induction into Quillen College of Medicine’s chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society at East Tennessee State University.
The society honors senior medical students, residents and faculty for demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.
Quillen’s Gold Humanism Honor Society chapter is made possible with a grant from The Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The foundation, a public, not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering humanism in medicine, provides support for more than 45 GHHS chapters at schools of medicine.
The selection committee at Quillen College reviewed peer nominations, clinical faculty recommendations, nominee essays and community service activities in choosing only nine students from the class of 2013 for this honor.
At the 2009 White Coat Ceremony during Fuller’s first year at Quillen College of Medicine, she was the sole recipient of The College of Medicine Humanism Award. Since then, she has founded The Corbett Clay Harp AIDS Project (CCHAP), an organization dedicated to the prevention of HIV/AIDS in the Johnson City, Tenn., community.
A graduate of Salisbury High School, Fuller is the daughter of Mike and Julie Fuller and Janice Moore Fuller.
