SALISBURY — Call them the comeback scramblers.
Members of the South Rowan Y Service Club spelled their way to victory at the Holiday Inn Tuesday night during the 2012 Scrabble Scramble, a fundraiser for the Rowan County Literacy Council.
Last year’s winning team from Trinity Oaks came in second, followed by the Friends of Rowan Public Library, First United Church of Christ/Salisbury Post, Purfekt Spelers, Ting Hao and Kay Norman’s team.
Before Trinity Oaks took home the trophy last year, the South Rowan group had won the scramble five years in a row. But the benefits of the scramble go beyond trophies, door prizes and 15-letter words.
“The real winners are our students, who have the courage to say, ‘I need help,’ ” said council President Phyllis Martin.
Among those registered on the winning team were Terry Bradley, Barbara Collins, Aaron Crowe, Gwen Goodman, Alan Lambert, Bruce Miller, Diana Pegram, David Roberts, Gay Roberts and Linda Sorrow.
The next scramble, the 10th, will be held April 28, 2013.
A United Way agency, the Literacy Council and its volunteer tutors help adults 16 and older improve their basic literacy skills and learn English as a second language.
