SALISBURY — Legal troubles for N.C. State running back Mustafa Greene trail back to Rowan County, court records show.
Greene, who led the Wolfpack in rushing yards in 2010, has battled injury and discipline issues over the last year.
He missed the entire 2011 season with a foot injury and was held out of spring practice for a week.
Now he’s facing a drug charge and a series of traffic violations.
Greene was going 97 mph in a 65 mph zone when he attracted N.C. State Highway Patrol trooper D.T. Sloop’s attention, according to arrest reports obtained by the Post.
The 20-year-old was stopped on Interstate 85 near Bringle Ferry Road on Feb. 10.
According to the report, Greene was driving a gray 2007 Dodge Charger with illegally tinted windows, a revoked tag, no insurance and no operators license.
Sloop noted Greene “said he was just trying to get to Charlotte” and pointed out “he didn’t roll the windows down until I made him.”
Sloop charged Greene with half a dozen violations, including speeding and reckless driving to endanger.
Despite the traffic violations and going more than 30 mph over the speed limit, Greene was cited and released.
But when he didn’t make it to his scheduled court date on March 16, a judge issued an order for his arrest.
Wake County authorities went to Greene’s off-campus apartment on Western Boulevard in Raleigh about 10 p.m. on April 2.
According to the News & Observer, police said a marijuana grinder, with marijuana residue, was found in Greene’s possession.
On April 3, N.C. State head coach Tom O’Brien told reporters Greene had not been kicked off the team.
He did not go into detail about the disciplinary action.
On Tuesday, O’Brien told the News & Observer the one-week suspension was not related to the off-field charges.
“We are aware of the situation, and the appropriate action will be taken,” O’Brien said.
Greene is now scheduled to appear in a Rowan County court on April 27.
