DePompa honored by insurance company
Debbie DePompa, art teacher at Forest Park Elementary School, has received a national honor from the Horace Mann Insurance Company.
Each year, Horace Mann selects 50 educators from around the country to be part of the Abraham Lincoln Fellowship Program.
This summer, DePompa will go to Illinois to walk in Lincoln’s footsteps. The Fellowship program will take her to several historical sites, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, Lincoln’s home, Lincoln’s tomb and the Old State Capitol State Historic Site.
DePompa has been with Kannapolis City Schools since 1989.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from Lenoir-Rhyne and a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
She is certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Salmon selected to Tar Heel Girls State
Dana Salmon, a junior at North Hills Christian School, was selected by the auxiliary of the Harold B. Jarrett Post of the American Legion to represent the Salisbury area in the Tar Heel Girls State Competition.
The purpose of Tar Heel Girls State is to provide citizenship training for rising senior high school girls,
Participants in Tar Heel Girls State are selected from a pool of high school juniors who are in the top third of their class academically.
This year’s week-long Tar Heel Girls State will be held June 10-16 on the campus of Catawba College.
Salmon, along with dozens of other students from across the state, will hear from highly regarded speakers.
Past speakers include city councilmen, mayors, college presidents, the N.C. secretary of state, as well as representatives from various social, legislative and judicial agencies.
“We are so pleased to see Dana selected to represent the Rowan-Salisbury community through this important program,” said Matt Mitchell, headmaster of North Hills Christian School. “As a member of our student government program, Dana has demonstrated that she is a deeply intellectual and thoughtful member of the community.
“We are thankful she was selected for this program, which will help her continue to develop and mature in her leadership potential.”
Oden on USC Upstate dean’s list
Ross Oden, an East Rowan High School graduate, has successfully earned the required GPA recognized for the dean’s list within the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of South Carolina Upstate for the fall 2011 semester. Oden is majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics.

Rockwell Christian students place in competition at week-long retreat
Thirty-two students from Rockwell Christian School recently joined hundreds of students from the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi and Maryland at The Wilds in Rosman for a week of competition, fun and spiritual growth.
After preparing for months, these students competed in the areas of academics, exhibits (photography, needle/thread, art, wood, clay and metal working), athletics, music and platform.
The purpose of these student conventions is to help the young people discover and hone their skills and talents for use in ministry to glorify the Lord.
First place medals were earned by the large ensemble; the volleyball team; Brittany Hopkins and Roni Boss in needle/thread categories; Autum Cline, pen and ink; Madison File, spelling; Benjamin Odom and Andrew Straight, Bible memory; Hannah Preslar, poetry recitation; Alexander Straight, Golden Apple Award (memorization of the entire book of Proverbs); and Jeremy Waller, running long jump.
Second place medals were earned by the boys’ basketball team; Roni Boss, Christian Burleson, Kayla Funderburk, Abbie Hoehman, Nathan Hoehman, Brittany Hopkins, and Crystal Mock, athletics; Micah Eagle, short story writing; Madison File, Abbie Hoehman, Nathan Hoehman, Ashlee Miller, Benjamin Odom, music; Autum Cline and Crystal Mock, needle/thread; Jared Graham and Titus Cruse, power point presentation; Jared Graham, preaching; Hannah Preslar, Bible memory; Kayla Funderburk, photography; and Nicholas Snyder, metal working. Students placed in sixty-one different categories.
Besides the numerous individual awards, Rockwell Christian School received first place in music, first place in athletics and second place in academic competition — three of the five overall school awards.
Of the 32 students, 29 qualified in 48 events to advance to international competition that takes place May 19-24, in Pennsylvania where they will compete with students from around the world.
In addition to the days of competition, the students enjoyed activities such as tubing, hiking, miniature golf and a giant swing.
The highlight of each evening was a song and preaching service provided by The Wilds staff.
