Free Violins of Hope event is Saturday

Saturday, April 7, master luthier Amnon Weinstein will speak about the Violins of Hope at 7:30 p.m., at Catawba College’s Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. Eighteen violins were recovered from the Holocaust and restored to concert-playing shape by Weinstein. Some of the Violins of Hope were played by Jewish prisoners in Nazi concentration camps during World War II, while others were part of the Klezmer musical culture that was almost wiped out by the Holocaust.
Violinist David Russell will play music from “Schindler’s List” on one of the restored violins. This is the only performance of one of the Violins of Hope outside of Charlotte.
Admission is free, but tickets are recommended. Call Tom Wolpert at 704-637-2389 or the symphony office at 704-637-4314. Tickets will be available at the door on concert night but seating is limited.
