Ron Robertson supplied this photograph, which he says was brought to him by Laura Johnson, who once worked at Northwestern Bank in Salisbury. It shows the 1970 Rowan County American Legion baseball team gathered for a team picture before leaving on Northwestern Bank’s corporate plane for Wilmington. When the Rowan boys left, they were leading the state championship series two games to none, but Wilmington won the next three on its home field before the series returned to Rowan. Wilmington won the sixth game to capture the N.C. championship. Rowan’s runner-up finish was sandwiched between its state titles in 1969 and 1971. Players include, in the front row, Dennis Butler, Dickie Myers, Perry Bernhardt, Cass Safrit, David McKinney, Kevin McNeely and Jimmy Beck. In the second row are Terry Osborne, Steve Myers, Franklin Miller, Donnie Basinger, Johnny Yarbrough, Jack Moore, Stan Link and Coach Joe Ferebee. Two players hidden from view are Rick McBride and Donnie Robertson.
