Area sports briefs: Salisbury softball gets first win

Katy Wolfe and Laney Gokey each went 4-for-4 as Salisbury’s softball team defeated Lexington 19-0 Tuesday.
It was the first win of the season for the Hornets (1-5, 1-1 CCC).
Freshman Leea Earnhardt struck out eight and went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Wolfe had two triples and Gokey two doubles.
Anna Tonseth matched Earnhardt with a 3-for-3 performance and Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer was 2-for-2.
Prep baseball
Carson’s baseball team was stunned 4-2 at North Iredell in NPC action on Tuesday.
“I told our team all week that North Iredell was a lot better than they have been,” Carson coach Chris Cauble said. “But we went up there not as focused as we should’ve been, and they jumped on us.”
Hitting in clutch situations was again a problem for the Cougars. They had nine hits, but they left 11 men on base, and 13 Cougars fanned.
Carson (8-4, 3-3) got only one run out of a bases-loaded, none-out opportunity in the second and failed to score after getting runners to second and third with one out in the third inning.
K.J. Pressley, Colton Laws and Bryson Prugh had two hits each.
Ethan Free pitched four innings, allowed three runs (one earned) and took the loss. Dillon Atwell pitched two innings.
• Corey Randall, Matt Vernon and Hunter Arey all had home runs as Davie County defeated North Davidson 12-2 in six innings.
Ryan Foster was the winning pitcher for the War Eagles (9-1, 3-1 CPC).
• East Davidson remained unbeaten in CCC action with an 11-1, five-inning win over Thomasville. East (8-3, 3-0) was led by Josh Craven, who had two hits and three RBIs.
• Caleb Jackson went 3-for-3 as A.L. Brown (5-7, 3-4 SPC) defeated Mount Pleasant 5-4.
Jackson had two RBIs in the first to help starter Eldon Peters, who pitched into the seventh before giving way to closer Ryan Austin.
• Corey Seager had three hits for Northwest Cabarrus in a 7-2 to Hickory Ridge. Kyle Rohan and Weston Smith had one hit each.
• West Davidson defeated Lexington 15-0. Justin Freeman was the winning pitcher for the Green Dragons.
Prep softball
South Rowan topped Statesville 7-1 behind Kacie Stamey’s three-hit effort.
Ann Martin and Emma Pope had two hits apiece for the Raiders. Sammy Kennerly and Logan Lowery each pitched for South.
• North Iredell beat Carson 3-0 Tuesday. Michaela White had two singles for the Cougars. Chloe Monroe, Lacee Hunsucker and Kinsley Bean all had hits.
Prep golf
Salisbury won the first CCC boys golf match of the season on Monday at Sapona.
The Hornets shot 149 to top West Davidson by five shots.
Troy Beaver and Clark Alcorn paced the Hornets with 36s.
Eric Edwards shot 38. Alex Nianouris and Alex Lee carded 39s. Joseph Rusher shot 41.
Leading the Green Dragons with 37s were Jake Hartman and Andrew Kahn.
The only other golfer to break 40 was East Davidson’s Justin Wood (39).
Five of the six CCC schools are competing this year.
• Jared Hough shot a 39 and helped East Rowan to an NPC win at Twin Oaks Golf Club in Statesville. East edged the Greyhounds 160-162.
Connor Lowman, Weston Rogers each shot 40, while Kyle Venrick and Jordan Shepherd had 41s. James Lohr shot 44 for the Mustangs.
West, led by Cameron Hassard (40) was third with a 167, followed by Carson (168). Andrew Purcell got a 40 for the Cougars.
South Rowan (170) was fifth. The Raiders were led by Davis Richards with a 40.
Prep tennis
Shelby defeated Salisbury 6-3 Tuesday.
Michael Odgen and Alan Lebowitz were singles winners for the Hornets. Odgen and Brock Overcash won a doubles match.
College softball
Catawba and host Mount Olive split a softball doubleheader Tuesday. Catawba Indians claimed the opener 6-1, while the Trojans took the second game of the twin bill 2-1. The Lady Indians are now 25-12 on the year. Mount Olive is 19-13.
Catawba (25-12) scored six runs in the seventh inning of Game 1 for the win. Mollie Kovalcin singled home the go-ahead run. Tara Gibbs provided the Indians with plenty of insurance, launching a grand slam for a 6-1 edge. Brittany Murray tossed a four-hitter improving to 10-7.
In the nightcap, Mount Olive trailed 1-0 in the sixth, but were able to plate a pair of runs.
Prep soccer
Jaylynn Ellington’s first goal of the season broke a scoreless tie in the second half and propelled North Rowan to a 3-0 win over Albemarle.
Meredith Sokolowski scored two second half goals as strong defense kept the Bulldogs out of goal.
Jayvee baseball
West Rowan improved to 10-0 with an 8-2 win over West Iredell.
Zack Russell led West (6-0 NPC) with three hits. Getting two each were Noah Teeter, Micah Marsh, Omar Bautista and Jeremy Simpson.
Middle baseball
Ike Freeman was the winning pitcher and had two hits in Erwin’s 14-3 win over Southeast on Tuesday.
Geoffrey Lillywhite had three hits, while Jordan Wise and John Owen had two apiece for the Eagles (2-1). Bryant Godsey blasted a three-run homer in the fifth for Erwin, who plays Mooresville at home Thursday.
• West Rowan defeated Mooresville 10-5 Tuesday.
Zach Shaver and Brett Graham combined to scatter six hits to lead the Bulldogs (2-1). West was lead by Brandon Walton at the plate and an excellent defensive game from (3B) Trevor Atwood. The Bulldogs play at home on Thursday against Southeast Middle.
• North Rowan beat Knox Middle 12-0 in five innings. Brandon White and Jake Pritchard led the Mavericks with three hits each. Robbie Monroe, Lee Sells, and Josh Baker contributed two hits apiece. Corbin Smith pitched a no-hitter for North with 7 strike-outs in 5 innings.
Middle soccer
Knox defeated North Rowan 2-0 Tuesday on goals by Katie Bullock and Phebe Daniels.
• Erwin’s girls beat Southeast 1-0 thanks to a penalty kick goal by Kelby Porter in the second half.
• Southeast boys defeated Erwin 9-0.
