Yesterday: Second Creek church

He’s difficult to make out, but that’s William Carson in front of a country church off Gheen Road. According to some recent research done by Linda Beck, who writes guest columns for the Post, the building was Second Creek AME Zion Church, which later became known as the Second Creek New Birth of Christ Church. This photo is from 1976 and was passed on to Beck by Carson’s daughter, Barbara Carson Brawley. Beck reported recently that land for the church was donated by Will Blackwell in 1867. The building was constructed by men named Blackwell, Wilson, Carson, Johnson, Kent and Jackson. The church, which has a small cemetery next to it, has fallen into disrepair today.
