K-12 students in the Rowan-Salisbury schools will be the beneficiaries of a Saturday, March 24 benefit concert hosted on the campus of Catawba College by Catawba’s Student North Carolina Association of Educators. Admission to the 11 a.m. concert, featuring a special performance from Christian Rock band Grace Reigns Down of Greensboro, will be open to those who make a donation of one school supply to attend.
The main goal of the concert is to collect enough school supplies, everything from pencils to backpacks, to give every child in need in three local schools the supplies they need for the 2012-2013 school year.
The concert will also feature the talents of local performers, including Catawba College students and be held on the lawn behind Catawba’s Cannon Student Center on the Intramural Field. Rain location will be in the Goodman Gymnasium in the Abernethy Physical Education Center on campus.

Tommy Talton returns
Friday night, March 23, Tommy Talton and Stan Robertson — “Two Old Cowboys…One Hat” — return to The Blue Vine with an evening of southern rock/blues/roots and r&b.
Talton is best known as a founding member of the Capricorn Records group Cowboy. He toured extensively in the 70s with Cowboy and with the Gregg Allman tour. Talton was also the guitarist on Gregg Allman’s “Laid Back” album. Tommy is back, touring with original Cowboy bassist Stan Robertson.

208th Army Band presents free concert
ALBEMARLE — The 208th Army Band will put on a free concert on Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center.
The band performs concerts and military marches for active duty troops and the civilian population. Selected musicians are members of combo and jazz ensembles within the band. The mission of the 208th Army Band is to build morale and community relations throughout North and South Carolina and to serve active duty troops wherever deployed.

Young artist reception
“Celebrating Rowan County’s Young Artists” is a display of artwork featuring the works of nearly 800 students representing Salisbury-Rowan County’s public, independent, and home-schooled students.
The second installment of the exhibit, which runs though March 29, features Rowan-Salisbury Elementary Schools. The reception to honor these students and their families, the art specialists, and school administrators is this evening, March 22, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Waterworks Visual Arts Center, 123 E. Liberty St. It is free and open to the public.
Spring break art class
Salisbury Art Station will host art classes from April 9-13. Students age 6-12 will meet from 9 a.m.-noon, and age 13-18 will meet from 2-5 p.m.

RCCC fine arts festival
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College kicks off their 2012 Literary and Fine Arts Festival with the play “Look Back the Maytime Days,” performed by the Touring Theater of NC, with Fred Chappell. The performance is at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 25 at the Norvell Theater, 131 E. Fisher St.

East Spencer exhibit
EAST SPENCER — Mayor Barbara Mallett, Aldermen Curtis Cowan, clerk Anneissa Hyde, receptionist Danielle Burris and Stacy Bottoms, North Rowan Middle School instructor, have organized an East Spencer Art Exhibit featuring local talent in honor of Black History Month.

Earth Day Birthday Jam 2012 is coming to Saving Grace Farm, 565 Trexler Loop, on Saturday, April 21 starting at 3 p.m.
The mission of the event is to raise awareness for land conservation, recycling, local produce, nutrition, and environmentalism and is a fundraiser for Saving Grace Farm and the Landtrust of Central NC.
