RALEIGH (AP) — The California Democratic Party plans to mobilize to help defeat a proposed constitutional amendment in North Carolina that would make clear traditional marriage is the only domestic legal union recognized by the state.
California Democratic Party chairman John Burton released a statement Tuesday praising President Obama’s announcement last week that he was opposed to the amendment on the May 8 ballot.
Burton said the party will be in touch with Democrats in his state on ways to get the word out on the amendment.
Jeremy Kennedy with the anti-amendment group Coalition to Protect NC Families says he’s been told the California party is committed to getting Democrats involved there by making phone calls to North Carolina voters.
The amendment also would affirm a current state law banning gay marriage.
