KANNAPOLIS — Fire destroyed a vacant house Tuesday night at the intersection of Hilltop Avenue and Pine Street in Kannapolis. While the cause is under investigation, the fire started during a lightning storm, said Shane Pethel, Kannapolis Fire Department investigator. Owner David Tilley of China Grove grew up in the home and was at the scene Tuesday night, Pethel said. The furnished home had been vacant for about a year. The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at 8:15 p.m. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes. Kannapolis Fire Department was assisted by Enochville and Concord fire departments, while Landis and Odell departments covered the working departments.
