At the recent annual meeting of the Rowan County Literacy Council, volunteers were honored for their commitment to literacy during 2011. Gary Rash received the Catherine Bernhardt Safrit award for extraordinary service during the same period.
The dinner meeting marked the anniversary of more than 35 years of service to the community, and a brief review of the early days. Flo Peck and Carolyn Myers told of the various milestones that have occurred, including incorporation, admission as a United Way agency and establishment of a permanent office at the Rowan Public Library.
Melody Moxley, chair of the nominating committee, presented their report, and Clyde Harriss, President Phyllis Martin, Secretary Carolyn Myers, and Eric Nianouris were elected to serve two-year terms.
Rowan County Literacy Council, a United Way agency, continues to serve the educational needs of adults in Rowan County. For further information call them at 704-216-8266.
