The FirstARTS series of First United Methodist Church will host the Duke University Chorale in concert this Saturday, March 10, at 7 p.m. The chorale is under the artistic direction of Dr. Rodney Wynkoop, Director of Music for Duke Chapel and University Choral Music.
The Duke University Chorale, the primary choral group of the Department of Music at Duke, is composed of 50 singers, most of whom are Duke students.
The Chorale’s tour repertoire typically features both sacred and secular music ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary works, from serious to relaxed music, and from unaccompanied works to pieces with piano and other instruments.
The concert is free and open to the public. Following the concert, an offering will be received for the church’s Music Memorial Fund. The church is located at 217 S. Church St. For details, contact the Stanback Department of Sacred Music at 704-636-3121, ext. 104.
‘Violins of Hope’ event
As part of the “Violins of Hope” Tuesday evening film/ music series, David Hagy’s Tuesday, March 13 oral presentation of Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time” will tell about the story behind it and the music in it.
In 1940, Oliver Messiaen was interned in a German prison camp where he created the “Quartet for the End of Time.” According to the composer, the Quartet was not a commentary on the Apocalypse, nor to his captivity, but a musical extension to the Biblical account (Revelation chapter 10) of the concept of the end of Time as the end of past and future and the beginning of eternity.
His quartet consisted of a clarinetist, a violinist, a violoncellist, and pianist. He and his friends performed it for their 5000 fellow prisoners on January 15, 1941.
The Salisbury Symphony Guild, Center for Faith & the Arts, and Catawba College’s Religion & Philosophy Department co-sponsoring these free films and musical events in the Tom Smith Auditorium at Catawba College that begin at 7 p.m. This series complements other activities in Salisbury to commemorate the “Violins of Hope” project in Charlotte.

The Ashley Jo Farmer Band and Sue McHugh team up for a birthday concert this Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m. at the Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee St.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ at Carson High
Carson High School Fine Arts Department presents Disney’s musical “Beauty and the Beast” April 26-29.

Catawba student’s ‘beat’ used by rapper
Rapper Neako is planning to make a music video out of a song that uses one of the beats of Catawba College senior Christopher Williams, a music business major. Williams had sent one of his beats to rapper Neako’s marketing team.
The beat is on Neako’s newest mix tape called, “Tr33,” as the rhythmic underlayment for his song, “Whippin’ Whippin’.”
Neako is an rapper, producer and songwriter whose debut album, “The Rubix Cube: Red Edition,” was released in 2007.

CHARLOTTE — Hart Witzen is now accepting submissions for “Showdown,” a group exhibit to take place April 28-May 4.
Deadline for submissions is March 23. All artists are welcome to apply: paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, installations, mixed and new media. Work does not have to be for sale. Artists may submit original, recent work (within 2 years) for consideration.
