Area sports briefs: East wins track meet

East Rowan’s boys won a track meet Tuesday against Salisbury and Mt. Pleasant.
Cole Honeycutt (800, 1600-meter runs), Chase Brown (300, 110 hurdles), Raykwon Torrence (long jump), Brad Oden (3200), Hakeem Gittens (triple jump) and Marshall Shank (pole vault) were all first place finishers for East. The Mustangs’ 3200-meter relay team of Conor Honeycutt, Graham Lyerly, Josh Rowell and Oden also earned first. East finished with 102 points, well ahead of Mt. Pleasant (42) and Salisbury (41).
Kavari Hillie (discus) and William Brown had first-place finishes for Salisbury, who also won the 400 relay.
Prep baseball
Northwest Cabarrus infielders Tanner Bigham and Corey Seager have been named to Perfect Game’s Dream Team for the Mid-Atlantic states, consisting of the Carolinas, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Delaware. The Trojans are ranked 14th in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Bigham, a junior second baseman, is committed to UNC. Seager, a senior shortstop who is ranked by Perfect Game as the best hitter in the Mid-Atlantic region, has signed with South Carolina.
Charlotte Providence is ranked No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic region and plays East Rowan at Staton Field today.
• West Iredell defeated South Rowan 9-0 Tuesday in the Raiders’ NPC opener.
Sean Grant threw a complete game for West, allowing four hits and striking out nine.
“Grant’s command was spectacular,” South coach Thad Chrismon said. “We also had too many self-inflicted mistakes.”
Dylan Goodman had two hits for South.
• North Rowan defeated East Montgomery 14-5 in a YVC game.
Travis Holshouser threw six innings and allowed no earned runs while striking out eight.
Mason Jennings had three hits for the Cavs while Thomas Tucker scored three runs. Josh Mock, Alex Morgan and John Hartley each had two hits.
• A.L. Brown didn’t give up an earned run but wasted Eldon Peters’ four-hit effort over five innings in a 5-1 loss to J.M. Robinson in the teams’ South Piedmont Conference opener.
The Wonders (1-3, 0-1) managed only two hits, a double by Caleb Jackson and an infield hit by Tyler Sides.
• Ledford beat West Davidson 10-7 Tuesday. Jonathan Colyn was the winning pitcher.
For West, Matt Berrier and Justin Freeman each had two hits.
Prep tennis
South Rowan’s boys team beat North Iredell 8-1 on Monday in NPC action.
Jared Waters, Reynold Sanchez, Trevor Burrow, Austin Todd and Jacob Ouellette won singles matches.
Doubles winners were Waters-Sanchez, Burrow-Caleb Barnette and Ouellette-Eddie Chavez.
• Watauga defeated Salisbury 7-2 Tuesday. Christopher Derrick was the lone singles winner for the Hornets.
Derrick and Clint Comadoll won their doubles match 8-6.
Prep softball
North Rowan (2-1) romped 12-2 in five innings against Salisbury on Monday.
Taylor Sells pitched a one-hitter and went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Her grand slam was the biggest blow for the Cavs, and Lindsey Hinson, Chasity Young and Lexis Gonzales also had big days at the plate.
Carson (2-2) lost to Central Cabarrus 13-7 on Monday.
Chloe Monroe went 4-for-4 for the Cougars. Heather Yount was 3-for-4, and Sidney Grkman was 2-for-3.
• West Rowan opened conference play Tuesday in Statesville winning 10-0 in five innings.
Mariah Taylor was the winning pitcher for the Falcons. Hunter Gibbons hit a solo homer and Diamond Suber went 1 for 2 with a bunt and a walk, scoring twice. West travels to South Rowan Friday.
• West Iredell defeated South Rowan 1-0 with a first-inning run.
Kayla Corriher had two hits for the Raiders. Courtney Frye pitched a complete game and held South to three hits.
• East Rowan defeated Carson 3-2. Steffi Sides scored the winning run and had two hits. Sydney Poole pitched well for East.
Chloe Monroe and Lacee Hunsucker had two hits apiece for Carson.
Prep soccer
West Rowan defeated Cox Mill 3-1 Tuesday in the first round of the NPC-SPC Challenge.
Allison Baucom scored twice and Toni Lucente gave the Falcons the lead for keeps with a second-half goal.
“We played a good second half,” West coach Nick Brown said. “We had to pick it up a lot after coming out slow at the start.”
West will play Robinson Thursday.
Prep football
Lexington has hired Kwayu Graham as its head football coach.
Graham was previously a defensive coordinator with the Yellow Jackets.
JV baseball
West Rowan’s jayvees improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the North Piedmont Conference with a 10-5 win over Statesville on Tuesday.
Micah Marsh was the winning pitcher. Getting two hits apiece for Brandon Earnhardt’s Falcons were Wood Poteat and Jeremy Simpson while Omar Bautista had two RBIs.
College basketball
Dave Robbins, a member of Catawba’s Class of 1966, was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday in Kansas City.
A native of Gastonia, Robbins competed in football, track and basketball at Catawba.
After coaching with great success at Thomas Jefferson High in Richmond, Robbins guided national-championship teams in 1980, 1992 and 2005 at Virginia Union.
Known as the “White Shadow” during his coaching days at Virginia Union, Robbins was the first white basketball head coach at a historically black university.
Robbins has established an athletic scholarship at Catawba.
Winston-Salem State legend Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, who played against Livingstone in Salisbury, also was one of Tuesday’s inductees.
College baseball
Catawba’s Garrett Furr hit a game-tying homer in the ninth and Ethan Satterfield singled home the deciding run in a 4-3 win over Stillman in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Tuesday.
Catawba (12-4) won its eighth straight game.
Graham Lawing (NW Cabarrus) won in relief. J.J. Jankowski earned a save.
D.J. Webb (West Rowan) started on the mound for the Indians, struck out six and pitched into the seventh inning.
West Alabama defeated Catawba 6-3 Tuesday night to end the Indians’ eight-game winning streak. Furr drove in two runs. Satterfield scored on a wild pitch in the ninth as Catawba got the tying run to the plate but couldn’t capitalize.
Pfeiffer’s Keith Little (Mooresville) was named Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week.
Little tossed a one-hitter against Tusculum.
College golf
Lauren Smith (Salisbury) shot a 77 and helped Appalachian State beat The Citadel and Dayton on Sunday at Hilton Head.
• Catawba’s Zach Griffis shot 144 for two rounds and tied for 12th in the Richard Rendleman Invitational held at The Country Club of Salisbury.
UNC Pembroke won the tournament. Belmont Abbey’s Adam Hedges was medalist at 139.
College lacrosse
Catawba’s Braden Artem was named Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Artem helped lead Catawba to a pair of road victories to keep the Indians undefeated.
Local golf
Sixty-four GARS members played a Texas Scramble tournament at Corbin Hills earlier this week.
The first-place team at minus-4 was Andy Griffin, Allen Hammill, John Noonan and Tom Talbert.
Finishing second at minus-3 was the team of Don Bishop, Bob Stepanian, Bob Wagoner and Dave Wilson.
Two teams tied for third at minus-1.
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Allen Hamill. Longest putt on No. 9 was by Ben Moore.
