Area athletes update: Golfers do well

Area athletes update …
Will Collins (Salisbury) tied for 14th in the Palmetto Hall Championship, an EGolf Professional Tour event held at Hilton Head.
Collins shot 74-69-76-65 and had the low round on the final day. It was the pro debut for Collins. He won $2,729.
Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) and Salisbury resident Frank Adams III also were in the event but missed the cut.
Cydney Clanton played in her first LPGA event recently in the Women’s Australian Open. She shot 74-72-75-74 —295, tied for 19th at 3-over and won $13,372.
Clanton played collegiately at Auburn and was an All-American. She was raised in Concord but her parents now live in Rockwell.
College track
Livingstone’s B.J. Grant (South Rowan) won the high jump in Saturday’s Pre- Conference Indoor Meet in Boone. Grant cleared 6 feet, 7 inches.
Lees-McRae’s Evan Webb (East Rowan) placed second in the pole vault in the Boone meet by clearing 14 feet, 73/4 inches.
Western Carolina’s Keith Leonard (East) was second in the recent Fast Track Invitational in Winston-Salem, clearing 14-51/4. Leonard’s teammate Wayne Parker cleared 13-111/4 for seventh.
Also in the FTI, Alisha Bradshaw (Salisbury) was fifth in the shot put (43-11/2) and third in the weight throw (49-1/4).
UNC Pembroke’s Diricka Mitchell (North Rowan) competed at Saturday’s UNC Invitational and had a personal best in the weight throw of 13.3 meters. Mitchell finished ninth.
nRoss Oden (East) ran a personal best 15:48 in the 5000 meters, finished 15th and helped USC Upstate placed third in Saturday’s Atlanta Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Western’s Olivia Jacobs (South Rowan) was 17th in the mile (5:33.78) in the Fast Track Invitational.
College baseball
Charlotte’s collection of East Rowan players performed well as the 49ers opened with three wins against St. Peter’s.
Justin Roland scored twice in a 4-1 victory. Ross Steedley homered and Corbin Shive knocked in two runs in a 10-0 romp.
Appalachian State’s Preston Troutman (East) and Trey Holmes (East) knocked in two runs apiece in an 8-3 win against Akron.
UNC Wilmington’s Micah Jarrett (East) tripled in his first official at-bat for the Seahawks on Saturday.
College softball
Campbell’s Ericka Nesbitt (East) went 9-for-14 in four weekend games and is batting a team-best .577.
Erin Foster (West Rowan) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Western Carolina to a 5-4 win against Florida A&M.
Women’s basketball
Ayana Avery (West) scored 13 for Radford in a 52-49 loss to Presbyterian.
Olivia Rankin (Salisbury) has recovered from an injury and is playing for Charlotte. She made her only field-goal attempt in Saturday’s loss to St. Joseph’s.
Shaw’s Shemieka Brown (North) went 2-for-2 from the floor in an 80-70 win against Fayetteville State and former teammate DaQuondra Cuthbertson.
Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) had nine rebounds for Gardner-Webb in a win against UNC Asheville.
Brevard’s Katelynne Poole (East) went 2-for-2 on 3-pointers in Saturday’s loss to Lenoir-Rhyne.
Bubbles Phifer (Salisbury) led Tallahassee Community College with 11 points in Saturday’s loss to Gulf Coast State.
Men’s basketball
Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) scored 18 points in Saturday’s upset of Lenoir-Rhyne.
College swimming
Andrew McCollister (Salisbury) finished second in the 200 breaststroke in the Blue Grass Championships (2:10.36).
College lacrosse
Brandi Cockerham (Davie) shared time in goal in Catawba’s first-ever women’s home lacrosse match Sunday and made two saves.
