Area sports briefs: North girls lose

North Rowan’s girls fell to North Moore 63-56 in the opening round of the YVC Tournament Monday.
Tiffany Brown matched her career high with 18 points to lead North Rowan.
Shakorya Brower scored 28 points for the Mustangs, who advanced to the second round. The Cavs cut their deficit to two before being hit with an intentional foul in the final minute. It was the second trip to Robbins for North in four days.
“I was pleased with our effort on the boards,” North Rowan coach Tony Hillian said. “We just weren’t able to hit the open looks.”
North Rowan (9-14) now awaits it fate for the state playoffs as the No. 5 seed from the YVC.

• South Davidson’s girls defeated Gray Stone 53-28 in the first round of the YVC tournament Monday night.
Addie Grubb scored 15 points for the Wildcats while Holly Wall and Hunter Sigmon added 10 each.
Tracey Allsbrook led Gray Stone with 11 points.
Wonder boys win
A.L. Brown’s third-seeded boys got 20 points from Tevin Stark and 16 from Braxton Waddell and beat No. 6 seed Cox Mill 68-48 in the first round of the SPC tournament on Monday.
Keeon Johnson added 12 points for the Wonders (16-8).
Brown is hosting the tournament semis and finals and will take on No. 2 seed Robinson at 7:30 tonight. Second-seeded Robinson beat Mount Pleasant 58-47.

A.L. Brown’s fifth-seeded girls fell 48-43 in a first-round matchup with No. 4 Northwest Cabarrus.
Livingstone men
The Livingstone men’s basketball team pulled off a big road upset in the CIAA Monday, defeating the Winston-Salem State Rams 83-65 at the C.E. Gaines Center.
Down the stretch Livingstone locked down on defense and went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe in the final four minutes to seal victory.
Nasir Austin scored a season-high 23 points. Mark Thomas added 12 points, and Omar Ford-Bey finished with 11.
Greg Henry led Livingstone with 10 rebounds and also added seven points.
Livingstone shot a blistering 53.7 percent from the field including 41.7 percent from the three-point line.
The Blue Bears converted only 58.8 percent of their free-throw attempts, but they forced 17 Ram turnovers and turned them into 24 points.
Livingstone women
Livingstone’s women’s basketball team fell 99-69 at Winston-Salem State on Monday in CIAA action.
Kelcyn Manurs and Tiffany Evans each scored 14 points for the Blue Bears. Cierra York finished with 11 points, and Sophie Lepzem added 10.
The Blue Bears shot 35.8 percent from the field and got outrebounded 44-28.
Catawba football
Catawba continues to add recruits.
Recent additions include defensive lineman Kegan Funderburk (Pageland, S.C., 6-3, 305), offensive lineman Reggie White (Chicago, 6-3, 285), receiver D.J. Abraham (Charlotte, 6-1, 160) and kicker Chad Hollandsworth (East Forsyth).
Funderburk, who moves exceptionally well for a big guy, is quite a coup for the Indians.
He was All-State in football and basketball at Central Pageland and played tight end for South Carolina in the 2010 Shrine Bowl. Funderburk had big-time offers at one point from schools such as South Carolina, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
White, an athletic offensive lineman, played at Iowa Central Community College.
Abraham was an all-conference performer for Olympic.
Hollandsworth was 8-for-10 on field goals this season and was twice named kicker of the year in the Piedmont Triad 4A.
College baseball
Bryan’s Jason Ridenhour (North Rowan) pitched a nine-inning one-hitter and struck out 11 in a 5-0 win against Rio Grande on Saturday.
Ridenhour (2-0) was pitching with snow falling.
Billy Veal (North) hit a home run for Bryan’s Lions.
Bryan won the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader 4-3.
Tanner Brown (2-0) pitched six innings and struck out four in the nightcap. Veal drove in a run.
Brevard’s Alex Litaker (East Rowan) pitched strong innings of relief in a 9-8 win against Alderson-Broaddus on Sunday. He struck out two.
Carson oyster roast
There will be an oyster roast in the Carson cafeteria on Saturday, March 17.
Proceeds will benefit the Carson Booster Club.
The menu, sponsored by Castaways, will include steamed oysters, oyster stew, shrimp, flounder, hot dogs, etc.
Prices are $35 for individuals, $60 for couples and $10 for age 12 and under. Kids under 5 eat free.

North Hills hoops
The North Hills elementary boys basketball team defeated Phoenix Montessori 43-15.
Leading the Eagles was Avery Frank with 10 points. Jarron Hines scored nine, and Carson Bailey added six. Parker Moody helped the Eagles with his defense and hustle
North Hills will begin conference play on Friday.n North Hills is offering a community recreational basketball program for students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Students who are not currently playing on a school elementary team are eligible to play. Participants will be divided into teams by age groups. They will practice and play their games on Saturdays.
A registration fee of $75 includes the uniform and trophy. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 17. To register, pick up a registration form at the school and submit payment between 8-3 or request a registration form by email.

Catawba Hall of Fame
The 2012 Class of Catawba Sports Hall of Fame Inductees includes Scherrie Dalton, Greg Payne, John D. Coble and Bill Wilhelm.
Hall of Fame Weekend is April 27-28, with a golf tournament set for the 27th at the Country Club of Salisbury and the induction ceremony on the 28th in Kirkland Lobby of Goodman Gym.
7th-grade hoops
Corriher-Lipe’s girls beat West Rowan 25-2.
Kiersten Morgan scored 12 points for the Yellow Jackets. Kallie Ketchie had five.
Michelle Grant scored the only points for the Bulldogs.
Knox’s girls rolled 49-8 against Southeast.
Leading scorers for Knox were Kiilantra Mashore with 12, Tyzarea Alexander with 10 and Destiny Hightower with eight.
Knox will be back at home with first place on the line when Erwin comes visits on Thursday.
Erwin’s girls beat North Rowan 35-16 to stay unbeaten.
Breya Philpott led the Eagles (6-0) with 11 points, 20 rebounds and six steals. Destiny Jackson had 10 points and seven steals.
Micah Furr grabbed seven rebounds. Courtney Wagner had four steals.
North Rowan (2-4) was led by Priscilla Oglesby with seven points.
North’s boys beat Erwin 46-27.
Joseph Scott (16 points), Ronnie Bryant (11) and Otis Smith (10) paced the Mavericks (3-3). Chris Clodfelter added five points for the winners.
DeAndre Gray led Erwin (2-4) with six points.
Catawba tennis
Catawba topped Pfeiffer 7-2 in men’s tennis on Monday. Catawba is 6-2, while the Falcons fell to 4-4.
