SALISBURY — Twenty-six students from throughout the Rowan-Salisbury School System gathered Tuesday to compete in the annual district-wide spelling bee.
They took down words like ecstatic, gourmet and elegant, but got tripped up on words like accrued, syllable and potassium.
Sixth-grader Robert Young became the king bee, conquering the words calzone, inflammable, carnage and dilemma.
He’s looking forward to Friday when his family will celebrate with a trip to CiCi’s Pizza.
“I’m probably going to eat about 30 pieces of pizza,” Robert, a West Rowan Middle School student said.
After that, he’ll start training for the regional competition that will take place in Winston-Salem next month.
“I’m going to start studying the lists whenever I can,” Robert said.
