North Rowan is at home against North Moore for a YVC doubleheader, starting at 6 p.m. It’s the only prep basketball matchup tonight involving a Rowan school.
North Rowan’s balanced boys, paced by Pierre Givens, will be expected to stay unbeaten in the league against a very young North Moore squad. The girls game figures to be more competitive. Both teams are in the league’s upper tier.
Senior Teaunna Cuthbertson leads North Rowan’s girls and could reach the 1,000-point milestone before the end of the season.
Shakorya Brower, Cadie Lowe and Jessie Sheffield lead North Moore’s girls.
A.L. Brown coach Shelwyn Klutz could collect his 200th win with the school’s boys program tonight when the Wonders host SPC opponent Northwest Cabarrus. Klutz is in his 15th season at the helm and owns a 199-161 record.
Junior guard Derrick Copeland has averaged 22 points in Brown’s last five contests, but his team is coming off a tight loss at Hickory Ridge. The Wonders’ biggest problem has been foul shooting. They’re at 54 percent for the season.
Davie County is on the road at Mount Tabor in a CPC doubleheader. Both boys teams won their league openers. Davie will again be without injured Caleb Martin, but Nate Jones has been unstoppable. The senior needs 32 points tonight to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
North Rowan and West Rowan will make up a basketball doubleheader in Mount Ulla on Wednesday. That game was originally scheduled for Nov. 30 but was pushed back by West’s football run.
In the NCPreps.com media poll that was released on Monday, Salisbury’s girls (12-2) are ranked second in 2A behind unbeaten Bandys. Six of the 11 media members who voted put the Hornets at No. 1.
Carson’s girls (14-1) moved up to third in 3A behind Hickory (14-1) and West Craven (13-0).
North Rowan’s boys (11-2) are ranked third in 1A behind Winston-Salem Prep (11-1) and Hayesville (14-0). The Cavaliers got three first-place votes.
In 3A, Concord’s undefeated boys (12-0) are ranked second behind Chapel Hill (14-0).
Middle schools
Boys
West 56, Erwin 50
West Rowan (11-1) rallied from a 25-20 halftime deficit and won despite a dozen 3-pointers by the Eagles.
Jalyn Cagle led West with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. Devon Morrison scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Dearius Phillips (11 points) and Amara Morris (nine points) also contributed for the Bulldogs.
Logan Shuping knocked down seven 3s for Erwin (5-7) and scored 24 points.
Austin Love hit three 3s and scored 15. Landon Goodman made two 3-pointers.
Southeast 43, Corriher-Lipe 35
Bryson Collins scored 19 points and grabbed six boards for the Patriots (4-8). Austin Russ chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.
Christian Holbrook led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points.
Girls
Erwin 38, West 28
The Eagles (10-2) stayed tied for first with North Rowan.
Jocelyn Lowe (11 points, seven rebounds) and Melonye McCree (10 points, 11 rebounds and four steals) paced Erwin. Shenique Pharr had nine points and seven boards. Shenell Pharr added six points and seven rebounds. Brittany Small had seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Khaila Hall had 16 points to lead West. She was also strong defensively and on the boards for the Bulldogs (8-4).

Unbeaten Erwin improved to 12-0 with a 57-33 win against West Rowan. See Scoreboard.
College cycling
Lees-McRae freshman cyclists Emily and Katherine Shields (Salisbury) earned top-five finishes in the USA Collegiate Cyclocross Nationals last weekend. Emily was third overall with a 46:01 time. Katherine placed fifth in 47:16.
The Bobcats rode in honor of fallen teammate Megan Baab, who died after a Dec. 15 training accident.

Women’s hoops
Livingstone senior Elicia Gilliam-Washington is a finalist for the CIAA Lowe’s Senior Class Award. Male and female award winners will be announced at the CIAA tournament on March 1.
