Area sports briefs: Livingstone women fall

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost to Elizabeth City State 70-59 in CIAA action in New Trent Gym on Thursday night.
ECSU’s De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) got a starting assignment in her hometown and contributed six points for the Vikings.
Stephanie Harper led the visitors with 17 points, and their balance overcame a 32-point onslaught by LC’s Kelcyn Manurs.
Manurs hit three 3-pointers and went 13-for-15 from the foul line.
Jasmine Murray also had a nice game for the Blue Bears with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Livingstone shot 29.4 percent from the field.

Pfeiffer hoops
K.C. Anuna’s fadeaway jumper from just above the free throw line with 0.7 seconds left in overtime propelled Pfeiffer’s men to a 91-89 Conference Carolinas win against Mount Olive on Thursday.
The Falcons (8-4, 2-0) erased an 11-point deficit in the final 8:24 of regulation to force overtime. Danny Smith scored 26 for the Falcons, while Anuna had 21.
Pfeiffer’s women didn’t make a field goal in the final six minutes and fell 79-73 to Mount Olive on Thursday.
Brittany Cox hit six 3-pointers for the Falcons (6-5, 1-1 CC) and scored 34 points, five shy of the school record.
Prep wrestling
Salisbury beat West Davidson 45-33 in CCC wrestling on Thursday.
The Hornets got pins from Tyrell Blakeney (106), Sam Murph (113), Jaleel Hitchens (120), D’Andre Hunter (132), Raylon Coleman (138) Jeffrey Burton (170) and Parker McKeithan (285), while Holden Hughley (152) won a decision.
Middle school wrestling
Undefeated Erwin beat China Grove 52-42 to improve to 11-0.
Corriher-Lipe fell 60-21 to Mooresville. See Scoreboard.

Erwin 49, China Grove 15
Erwin’s girls moved into a tie for first place with North Rowan.
Erwin (9-2) was led by Brittany Small’s nine points. Montana Kimrey hit two 3-pointers, scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Kristina Everhart had seven points and five boards. Jocelyn Lowe, Shenique Pharr and Shenell Pharr added six points apiece. Shelby Lowe led the way in assists with four, and Casey Ward had five rebounds.
China Grove (0-11) was paced by Casey Josey with eight points.
Corriher-Lipe 21, Mooresville 17
Malyasia Williams scored seven points for the Yellow Jackets (5-6), and Kamryn Stamey had six.
Boys
Erwin 56, China Grove 45
The Eagles put five players in double figures. Logan Shuping paced Erwin (5-6) with 14 points. Landon Goodman hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Addison Fry and Austin Love added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Austin Love scored nine.
China Grove (5-6) was led by Michael Morrison with 17 points. Ryan Bearden added 14 for the Red Devils.
Southeast 35, North 32
Alex Yang hit the game winning 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to lift the Patriots. Bryson Collins and Austin Russ led the scoring for the Patriots with 11 points each.
Josh Handy scored 13 and Naquis Caldwell chipped in with 11 to lead the Mavericks.
Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys jumped out to a 13-2 lead and cruised past Greensboro’s Our Lady of Grace 49-23 at the Boyd Dolphin Tank.
The hosts were led by Joseph Harrison’s 20 points and seven steals. Will Casmus added six points, while Max Fisher, Reilly Gokey and Spencer Storey scored five each.
Storey and Arun Kelly-Rajan had nine rebounds each and Casmus and Fisher pulled down five apiece. Kelly-Rajan also had six steals.
Sacred Heart’s varsity girls lost to the Panthers 28-18.
SAC basketball
Catawba is home for afternoon games against Anderson on Saturday.
Tusculum’s Kendal Baxter set school and SAC records by making 11 3-pointers in an 82-73 loss to Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday.
N.C. Hall of Fame
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame announced it will induct an eight-member class in May. Lennie Rosenbluth and M.L. Carr will be enshrined along with Wilt Browning, Wray Carlton, Sam Esposito, Dr. Jerry McGee, Kristi Overton Johnson and Henry Trevathan.
Softball clinic
The Catawba softball team will hold a softball/baseball training clinic on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 16.
The clinic will be held at Extreme Performance in Salisbury and will run from 9-4. The cost of the clinic is $75. Extreme Performance is located at 1504 Kentucky St. in Salisbury.

Bradley Pinion (NW Cabarrus) is playing in Saturday’s Army All-American Bowl football that will be televised on NBC at 1 p.m.
Hurley Y hoops
Register Now for boys basketball and the Little Shooters Clinic at the Hurley YMCA.
Boys basketball is for ages 7-14. It’s a great induction to the game and teaches basic fundamentals and YMCA principles.
The cost is $36 for members and $60 for non-members.
Coaches are needed.
The Little Shooters Clinic is for boys and girls ages 3-6.
The cost is $23 for members and $33 for non-members. The clinic is limited to 20 participants.

Salisbury Parks and Recreation is now taking registration for its Jr. Bobcats program for girls ages 7-15 and for youth basketball leagues for ages 5-6.
Registration is $35. Register at Hall Gym through Jan. 14.
