Catawba’s men’s basketball team rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half to lead by six, but Wingate ended the game on a 13-1 run to take a 77-69 win on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena.
The Bulldogs improve to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 3-8 and 0-3.
Wingate (6-7, 2-1 SAC) controlled the opening half and led 31-23 at the break.
The Indians (3-8, 0-3) trailed 39-26 with 18:05 remaining before mounting a 32-13 run over the next 10 minutes. Lee Martin made a 3-pointer, hit three free throws and canned another from behind the arc to put the Indians up 43-41 at the 14:34 mark.
Catawba kept its lead into the final minutes. Cameron Lovelace gave the Indians a 63-58 edge with 6:30 to go and Martin made it 68-64 on the last of his four three-pointers at the 3:47 mark. That, however, would be the last field goal by Catawba.
Martin led Catawba with 20 points. He collected seven rebounds. Willie Gilmore scored 14 points, while Justin Huntley added 12 points and handed out nine assists.
Catawba did not help its cause with a 12-for-24 performance at the line.
Livingstone is home tonight for its CIAA opener against Elizabeth City State.
The Livingstone men’s and women’s basketball teams will host the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University Thursday, in the CIAA openers for both squads.
Livingstone’s men (3-3) will seek to end a three-game losing streak. Nasir Austin (15.5 points per game) leads the Blue Bears. Elizabeth City State’s men are 6-4. Angelo Sharpless (11.5 ppg) leads the Vikings.
Reggie Hollinger scored 27 points to lead Pfeiffer to a 79-69 win against St. Andrews on Tuesday in Conference Carolinas action.
Women’s hoops
Catawba senior forward Dana Hicks recorded her 45th career double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds as the Indians defeated Wingate 66-59 Wednesday night.
Catawba improves to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while Wingate fell to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Catawba (7-4, 2-1 SAC) was led by Nisha Long with 22 points. Freshman backcourt mate Chloe Bully contributed 19 points on the strength of a game-high four 3-pointers.
Livingstone’s women (4-7) host Elizabeth City State today at 5:30 p.m.
The Vikings are 6-4. Salisbury’s De’Rya Wylie gets a lot of minutes off the bench for the Vikings.
Former Livingstone standout Brittany Wright is playing professionally in Portugal.
Pfeiffer tied a school record with 14 3-pointers and beat St. Andrews 97-43 to open Conference Carolinas play.
Brittany Cox scored 23 points for the Falcons.
Jayvee hoops
Samuel Wyrick scored 27 points as East Rowan’s jayvee boys outlasted South Rowan 58-51 on Wednesday.
Chase Brown helped out with nine points. Seth Wyrick scored seven.
South placed two in double figures with Lavon Hill leading the way with 14. Qwantarius Rhyne scored 10.
• South Rowan got 13 points from Cassidy Chapman and eight from Kayla McClendon to lead South Rowan to a 40-36 victory over the Mustangs on Wednesday.
Karleigh Troutman led East with 14, and Shelby Benge added eight.
Middle school hoops
Girls
Southeast 43, China Grove 7
Shanice Miller led the Patriots with 13 points. Taylor Martin scored 12, and Addison Collins added 5.
Southeast(6-4) hosts North Rowan today.
Erwin 42, Corriher-Lipe 16
Jocelyn Lowe scored 14 points to lead the Eagles.
Brittany Small added seven points, six rebounds and four blocked shots for the Eagles (8-2). Avery Wright had six rebounds and six steals. Melonye McCree grabbed six boards. Shenell Pharr added five points and three assists.
Corriher-Lipe (4-6) was paced by Kamryn Stamey and Malaysia Williams with seven and six points, respectively.
Boys
Corriher-Lipe 45, Erwin 35
Christian Holbrook scored 21 points for the Yellow Jackets (4-6). Brandon Egnor and Tre Littlejohn had six points apiece.
Erwin (4-6) was led by Logan Shuping with 10 points. Austin Love added eight.
China Grove 58, Southeast 40
Michael Morrison scored 23 for the Red Devils, while Tyler Rary had 15.
Rockwell Christian
Rockwell Christian’s Chargers swept their basketball games on Tuesday.
Titus Cruse had 10 points to lead the jayvee boys to a 23-21 win.
Rockwell Christian’s girls defeated Tabernacle 35-17.
Karmin Cranford led the Chargers with 12 points.
Coach Joel Hougton’s varsity boys beat Monroe 67-33 for their sixth straight victory. Alex Straight’s 29 points paced the Chargers, while Andrew Straight had 13 and Jon Robinson 12.
Rockwell plays at home again next Tuesday.
North Hills hoops
The North Hills girls won 51-46 against Davidson Day on Tuesday. Abby Lane led the scoring with 19 points, and C.C. Lyerly put in 14.
East boosters
The East Rowan Booster Club will meet Monday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. in the East Rowan library.
New East Rowan football coach Danny Misenheimer will be introduced.
Middle school wrestling
Erwin’s wrestlers topped Corriher-Lipe 72-15. See Scoreboard.
Local golf
Phil Miller and Blake Wray won Flight 1 in Corbin Hill’s New Year’s Eve tournament.
A total of 34 two-man teams competed.
The format was six holes-best ball, six holes-Captain’s Choice and six holes-modified alternate shot.
Roger and Nick Lyerly won Flight 2 and Stevie Blankenship and Matt Edwards won Flight 3. Flight 4 was won by David Johnson and Ronnie Thompson.
