First round games
Salisbury-West, 1:30 p.m.
East-Carson, 4:30 p.m.
North-South, 7:30 p.m.
No. 1 Davie
Record: 9-1
Season record vs. Moir teams: 3-0
All-time record vs. Rowan schools in Moir: 35-42
Coach: Mike Absher (10th season, 2 Moir championships)
Top players: The War Eagles have a quartet of stars in seniors Nate Jones (25.9 ppg) and Shannon Dillard (15.0) and sophomore twins Caleb Martin (15.2) and Cody Martin (10.6). The twins already have offers from N.C. State and Wake Forest, among others.
Who beat these guys? Lost a close one to Greensboro Smith with Jones sitting out.
Chance to win: War Eagles are the clear-cut favorite.
Moir titles: 4
Last title: 2004 (MVP Josh Aiken)
Last championship game: Lost to Salisbury in 2010
No. 2 North Rowan
Record: 6-2
Record against Moir teams: 1-2
All-time record in Moir: 47-46
Coach: Andrew Mitchell (2nd season, 33-7). He won the tournament twice as Salisbury girls coach and also as player as North’s MVP in 1983.
Top player? Hard to say. It’s a balanced team. In eight games, six different guys have been the leading scorer.
Chance to win: It wouldn’t be a shock. North is 1A, but it has 4A coaching, depth and talent.
Moir titles: 6
Last title: 2000 (MVP Marcus Lawing)
Last championship game appearance: Lost to Salisbury in 2009
No. 3 East Rowan
Record: 7-4
Record against Moir teams: 2-1
All-time record in Moir: 36-56
Coach: Trey Ledbetter (2nd season, 8-24)
Top players: Jordan Shepherd (13.1 ppg), hero of the win against West, is the top scorer, but rebounding demon Hakeem Gittens is equally important.
Chance to win: East doesn’t match up well physically with any of the higher seeds, but if they keep it in the 40s, who knows? This is a team of seniors, they understand what they have to do to win, and they’ve taken six in a row.
Moir titles: 2
Last title: 2006 (MVP Spenser Davis). No. 4 West Rowan
Record: 5-4
Record against Moir teams: 4-3
All-time record in Moir: 52-38
Coach: Mike Gurley (15th season, 318-89 at West, 4 Moir titles)
Top player: Senior guard Keshun Sherrill (22.1 ppg) is one of the county’s all-time scoring leaders. He’s two points away from 1,500.
Chance to win: Any team with Sherrill playing and Gurley coaching has a chance.
Moir titles: 10
Last title: 2005 (MVP Jamel Carpenter)
Last championship game: Lost to SHS in 2008
No. 5 Salisbury
Record: 4-5
Record against Moir teams: 2-3
All-time record in Moir: 61-34
Coach: Jason Causby (7th season, 112-60). He coached Hornets to Moir titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Top player: It’s 6-foot-8 junior Tony Nunn (12.1 ppg) when he brings it.
Chance to win: If the Hornets solve some issues, it’s possible. Can’t count them out because they’ve owned this tournament lately.
Moir titles: 14
Last title: Four-time defending champs. Five straight trips to title game.
No. 6 Carson
Record: 3-8
Record against Moir teams: 1-2
All-time record in Moir: 5-8
Coach: Brian Perry (6th season, 53-83)
Top players: Sophs Tre Williams (13.5 ppg) and Colton Laws (12.2) have big futures.
Moir titles: No trips to the final so far
No. 7 South Rowan
Record: 2-10
Season record vs. Moir teams: 0-2
All-time record in Moir: 42-54
Coach: John Davis (13th season, 108-201)
Top player: If he’s able to play, it’s junior slasher/shooter Josh Medlin (14.6 ppg).
Moir titles: 1 (1995, MVP Jason Crook)
Last championship game: Lost to West in 2002
