The teachers and support staff at Isenberg Elementary participated in the iPad project.
The staff completed two days of training from Apple’s Professional Development Division.
Teachers at the school will receive an iPad and the school’s PTA has purchased a class set for the students through the Matching Funds grant.
During the training, teachers were involved with integrating technology into social studies, creating digital books, making video math lessons, creating virtual field trips to Stonehenge, Paris and Austria.
“It never ceases to amaze me at how technology has changed the game in education,” Principal Nathan Currie said. “We must equip our teachers and schools with the latest technological resources in order to compete on the global spectrum.”
During the two-day session teachers learned how to create video lessons and worked with several apps that will assist struggling students.
Rachel Troutman, a fourth grade teacher, said her favorite part was the talking dictionary.
The app on the iPad will allow students to look up a word either through typing or students saying the word.
Troutman explained in many cases she finds that students can say the word but they have a difficult time spelling the word.
With this app, it does not delay the process and the students have access to thousands of words and definitions within seconds.
Chastity Ramsey, a second grade teacher, said she loves the iMovie app that allows students to make a mini video.
Now, students can make a mini movie about verbs and it will allow them to add sound and video, but most important, they have ownership with their learning, she said.
