Students from Salisbury and West Rowan high school recently participated in Wreaths Across America, laying large live wreathes with bright red bows on the graves of deceased soldiers at the Salisbury National Cemetery.
“We are all proud to be Americans that live in a free society made up of many people and many races from many walks of life,” Maj. Queen Williams, a JROTC instructor at Salisbury High, said during the ceremony. “The freedoms we enjoy today have not come without a price, lying here before us and in cemeteries throughout this nation are men and women who gave their lives so that we can live in freedom and without fear.”
Williams said its important for students to understand why they need to remember and honor veterans.
The students placed about 100 wreathes on grave throughout the cemetery. About 20,000 veterans are laid to rest there.
Williams said her students will be attending Downtown Salisbury Inc.’s Friday Nights Out in the future to gain support for the initiative.
