Essay contest deadline Dec. 20 for King birthday

The W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center invites the principals and staff of local schools to support the center’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration by encouraging students to participate in the annual essay contest.
Essay topics and word counts are:
• High school students: How Do I Want to Be Remembered (as it relates to the character of Dr. King), 500 words;
• Middle school students: How has Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream Speech” impacted my life? 300 words;
• Elementary school students: What Can I Do to Make Dr. King’s Dream a Reality? 100 words.
Entries must be received in the Chaplain Service Office by Dec. 20. No late submissions will be accepted. Winners will be notified through their schools, no later than Jan. 3.
All winners will be asked to read their essays at an awards program to be held 6 p.m. Jan. 9 at the VA Medical Center, 1601 Brenner Ave.
