SALISBURY — Dick and Pennie consider Daryl and Phillip two of their “very best friends.” They vacation together, travel together and go to church together.
That’s why the couple donates to Christmas Happiness in honor of the two each year.
“They do a lot in the community,” Dick said. “They are sort of unsung heroes if you will.”
Money collected through Christmas Happiness is given to the Rowan County Department of Social Services to buy Christmas gifts for children from low-income families.
Dick said Phillip directs the choir at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, as well as the annual “Glory of Christmas” concert and a community concert hosted on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
He said in the past Daryl has worked with Meals on Wheels of Rowan County.
Dick said donating to Christmas Happiness has become a Christmas tradition for his family.
“We like it because it’s local and it goes to people in need,” he said.
Bring contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to The Salisbury Post, Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, NC 28145-4639.
