College Football: Coastal fires former Catawba coach Bennett

CONWAY ó It seemed David Bennett could do no wrong as a football coach.
He was 63-17 at Catawba, earning a spot in the schoolís Hall of Fame.
He left to start the football program at Coastal Carolina and promptly went 34-11 in his first 45 games, including Big South title in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

President David DeCenzo announced Friday that Bennett has been relieved of his duties. He will be reassigned to another position at the school.
Bennett is the only head coach Coastal’s football program has known. He led Coastal to the Big South’s first and only NCAA at-large playoff berth in 2006, while earning the league’s first NCAA automatic playoff berth in 2010.
Bennettís overall record is 126-56. He led the Chanticleers to a 7-4 overall record this season, including a 3-3 mark and a third-place finish in the Big South Conference. He was a two-time coach of the year award winner.
