SALISBURY — Salisbury Academy students Sharmi Amin, seventh grade, and Ann Fisher Lindsay, eighth grade, recently won top honors in The Greater Cabarrus Reading Association competition.
Sharmi’s entry is a poem titled “A Song of North Carolina,” and Ann’s entry is a poem called “Cheerwine.”
The writing of both girls will be entered in the next level of competition, the North Carolina Young Authors’ Competition. Winners of the statewide competition will be announced early next year.
The 2011-12 Young Authors’ Project theme is “The Treasures of North Carolina.”
For this project, young authors are encouraged to write in poetry or prose, as fiction or non-fiction.
Suggested topics for students and “forever young” writers are travel treasures, natural treasures, historical treasures, treasured memories, buried treasure, treasured people and treasured places.
The Greater Cabarrus Reading Association is a group of people who are dedicated to literacy, promoting reading to children of all ages and encouraging creative writing through an annual Young Authors writing contest.
