The principal of Isenberg Elementary School will move up to fill the position of assistant superintendent of administration for the Rowan-Salisbury School System.
District officials announced Tuesday that Nathan Currie will take over the role vacated by Dr. Walter Hart, who left at the end of October to become the superintendent of Hickory Public Schools.
Currie starts his new job Jan. 1.
Currie, 33, began his career as a student teacher in 1998, working at both Knox Middle and Henderson Independent High.
He’s worked his way from being a fifth-grade teacher at Hanford-Dole to assistant principal at North Rowan Middle. He left the district in April 2007 to become the director of minority achievement and special programs for Duplin County Schools. He returned as principal of Isenberg in September 2008.
Currie said he’s excited to begin his new job.
“I’ve been a person who has always sought challenges and areas to grow,” he said Tuesday. “The assistant superintendent job seems like the next logical move to have a greater impact on the school community.”
Currie said working in various facets of education will give him an edge when he begins his new job.
“It takes a lot of good people to run a school system,” he said. “It allows an individual to understand and appreciate what those people do daily when you have walked in their shoes.”
Currie said he has no fear of walking into challenging situations.
When he took over at Isenberg, the school was one of the lowest performing in the state. Under his direction, the school has rebounded to achieve high growth.
“I’m quite sure there will be some challenges that are presented in my new position,” he said. “With the right people, right plan and right vision, we can have success out of those challenges.”
Currie received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Livingstone College, where he attended on a full scholarship. He earned his master’s in school administration and supervision from the University of Phoenix in Charlotte.
