area sports briefs: Mustangs fall to Hickory Ridge

From staff reports
Hickory Ridge gradually pulled away from East Rowanís girls basketball team on Tuesday night and won 66-41 against the Mustangs.
East coach Danielle Porter said East (0-3) played poor defense and relied too heavily on 6-foot-3 sophomore center Karleigh Wike.
Wike did all she could, scoring 14 points, grabbing 17 rebounds and blocking six shots, but she was the only player in double figures.
Hurting East as much as the poor defense was free-throw shooting. The Mustangs were just 12-for-25 at the stripe.
n East Rowanís boys had their best effort of the young season but fell 54-43 to Hickory Ridge in Harrisburg on Tuesday.
ěIt was anybodyís game with about four minutes to go,î East coach Trey Ledbetter said. ěWe defended well and dictated pace down to those last four minutes.î
Jordan Shepherd led the Mustangs (0-3) with 18 points. Hakeem Gittens added 12.
ěJordan shot well and Hakeem rebounded like crazy, but they had a real studly guy (Seth Still) in the postî Ledbetter said.
