The regional roundup …
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ó Tron Martinezís 1-yard run in overtime lifted Marshall to a 34-27 win over East Carolina on Saturday.
Marshall (6-6, 5-3 Conference USA) became bowl eligible for the first time under second-year coach Doc Holliday.
Dominique Davis was intercepted on East Carolinaís overtime possession, keeping the Pirates (5-7, 4-4) out of a bowl for the first time in six years.
Davis threw three touchdown passes to Justin Jones, including a 6-yarder with 14 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Davis finished 32 of 48 for 285 yards.
East Carolinaís Mike Barbour tied a school record with a 58-yard field goal as the clock ran out at halftime for a 20-17 lead.
ACC
GAINESVILLE, Fla. ó Devonta Freeman had two short touchdown runs following turnovers, and Florida State beat rival Florida 21-7 despite only 95 yards of offense.
The Seminoles (8-4) were inept most of the night, but they took advantage of John Brantley’s first-half mistakes and later knocked the senior quarterback out for good.
Florida State sealed its second consecutive win in the once-revered series when Terrance Parks intercepted a pass by Jacoby Brissett in the fourth quarter and returned it 29 yards for a score, which sent many of the 90,798 on hand scrambling for the exits.
The Gators (6-6) avoided their first shutout since 1988 when Brissett found Quinton Dunbar for a 6-yard score with 4:16 left.
Brantley ended the worst game of his career in the locker room. He was sandwiched between two defenders as he released a pass in the second quarter and sustained an apparent concussion.
BORDER WAR
KANSAS CITY, Mo. ó James Franklin rebounded from three early interceptions to toss two second-half touchdown passes, and Missouri rallied for a 24-10 victory over Kansas on Saturday in what could be the final edition of the 120-year-old Border War rivalry.
The Tigers (7-5, 5-4 Big 12) head to the SEC next season, and Kansas has said it has no intention of playing Missouri out of conference.
On the other sideline was Turner Gill, who may have coached his final game for Kansas (2-10, 0-9).
Gill is just 5-19 in two seasons in charge, and 10 straight losses.
BIG TEN
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ó Indiana wanted to salvage something from its miserable season by hanging onto the Old Oaken Bucket. They couldn’t even manage to do that.
Ralph Bolden ran for one score, Antavian Edison scored two TDs and Carson Wiggs made four field goals, helping Purdue (6-6, 4-4) get past archrival Indiana 33-25 and possibly into its first bowl since 2007.
Minnesota 27, Illinois 7
MINNEAPOLIS ó MarQueis Gray rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another score, guiding the Golden Gophers past backsliding Illinois 27-7 on Saturday in the season finale and sending the Illini (6-6, 2-6) to their sixth straight defeat.
