DAR awards three good citizens

The John Knox Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has presented the 2011-12 Good Citizen Awards to Nick Martin, Caleb Helms and Christa Landy.
• A senior at Jesse C. Carson High School, Nick Martin is the son of Lisa and Allen Martin. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina, Duke University or Harvard University for a degree in American studies followed by a master’s and doctorate in history to teach at the university level.
Very involved at Carson, Nick Martin is president of the National Honors Society; served as a Junior Marshal; participated in the Mr. Carson “beauty contest”; was a member of Future Teachers of America; and participated in football, basketball and track. He has been nominated for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship and was a Governor’s School nominee in English and history.
Over the summer, he attended Tar Heel Boys State, Broyhill Leadership Conference, Student Athlete Summer Institute and took part in the China Grove and Catawba College 5K runs.
In the community, he has been involved in Special Olympics, Operation Christmas Child and various projects with his youth group. An active member of First Baptist Church in Kannapolis, he participated in a 10-day Ukraine trip with the youth group. He also worked with Native Americans at the S[0x13]appony Youth Camp, participated in the S[0x13]appony Annual Tribal Homecoming and College Horizons in Wisconsin. He works part time at Chick-fil-A.
• Caleb Helms is a senior at South Rowan High School. The son of Eric and Kimberly Helms of China Grove, he plans to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing and go to medical school to pursue a career in pediatric medicine. He wants to specialize in pediatric oncology.
Very active at South Rowan, Caleb has served as drum major for two years and has been in the Marching Band all four years. He also served on Student Council all four years, as class president his first three years, as Student Body treasurer and Student Body president this year. He is in the National Honor Society, was a Junior Marshal, Science Club president, and was a member of Spanish Club, Patriots Club and CYC/YCI/ MAD. He is on the swim team and has participated in county, conference and state meets.
Helms helped organize a carnival and another event to raise money for a student with leukemia, coordinated the 30-hour Famine Event and tutors classmates.
In the community, Helms has a career internship at Main Street Clinic, has assisted with American Red Cross blood drives, volunteered at Main Street Missions and helped serve meals to needy families. He has also worked with Relay for Life.
Helms attends Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where he is active in the youth group. He helped organize and run a Bible School during a mission trip to Cedar Island and visited nursing homes in Morehead City. He also teaches an AWANA children’s class. He also works as a lifeguard and teaches swim lessons.
• Christa Landy is a senior at West Rowan High School. The daughter of Harvey and Myrtice Landy, she is Battalion Commander in JROTC at West. One of their activities is to help at the homeless shelter.
Landy is a member of the girls varsity basketball team and the track team. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and the Environmental Club.
An active member of the youth group at The Church of My Lord Jesus Christ in Charlotte, she sings in the choir and helps raise money for needs in Africa.
Landy was presented as a debutant at a ball sponsored by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She plans to attend East Carolina University to major in business management.
All three winners will be recognized at the DAR meeting Jan. 14, 2012, at Trinity Oaks.
