The college football roundup …
ELON ó Jamal Jackson threw four touchdown passes as Appalachian State rallied from a 21-0 deficit for a 28-24 win over Elon on Saturday.
The comeback ties the largest deficit overcome by the Mountaineers (8-3, 6-2 Southern Conference) since their move to Division I in 1972.
With his team trailing 24-14 at halftime, Jackson threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Brian Quick in the third quarter and found Steven Miller on a 5-yard score for the game-winner with 11:14 to play in the game. Jackson passed for 284 yards. Quick had 11 catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Elon (5-6, 3-4) built a 21-7 lead after the first quarter but could not find the end zone the rest of the game. Thomas Wilson passed for 344 yards and two touchdowns while Aaron Mellette caught 14 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown for the Phoenix (5-6, 3-5).
East Carolina 38, Central Florida 31
GREENVILLE ó Dominique Davis threw four touchdown passes, including a pair to Reese Wiggins, but it took a 56-yard touchdown run by Torrance Hunt with 2:10 left in the game for East Carolina to beat Central Florida 38-31.
East Carolina (5-6, 4-3 Conference USA) broke a two-game losing streak and kept its bowl hopes alive. The Pirates finish their season at Marshall next Saturday. UCF (4-7, 2-5) lost for the third straight time.
Davis finished 19 of 31 for 203 yards but was intercepted once. His four touchdown passes matched his season high set in East Carolina’s season-opening loss to South Carolina. One of his scoring passes to Wiggins was for 84 yards, the fourth longest in ECU history.
Davis also added a career-high 62 rushing yards on 12 carries.
Florida 54, Furman 32
GAINESVILLE, Fla. ó Andre Debose, the highly-publicized high school standout, turned in his best performance ever in a Florida uniform, grabbing two long passes from quarterback John Brantley and turning them into touchdowns to power the Gators to a tougher-than-expected 54-32 win over Furman on Saturday.
The win by the Gators (6-5) made them bowl eligible to participate in their 21st consecutive post-season game, the longest stretch in the SEC and second-longest mark in the country.
It didn’t come easy for Florida however. Furman (6-5), a Football Championship Subdivision team, stunned the Gators by opening up a 22-7 advantage after one quarter.
Coastal Carolina 45, WCU 21
CULLOWHEE ó Aramis Hillary threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to help lead Coastal Carolina (7-4) over Western Carolina 45-21 on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Catamounts (1-10) have lost nine straight games and 15 in a row to Division I teams.
Former Carson star Shaun Warren led WCU with 56 yards on 12 carries.
Wofford 28, Chattanooga 27
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ó Mitch Allen punched in a 1-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds left to play, keeping Wofford’s hopes alive for an at-large Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth with a 28-27 win.
Davidson 30, Valparaiso 22.
DAVIDSON ó Jonathan Carkhuff passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as Davidson (4-7, 2-6 Pioneer Football League) rallied past Valparaiso.
