Cardboard license plate leads to arrest of Cleveland couple

SALISBURY ó A Cleveland couple were arrested on drug charges Thursday after police stopped them because an illegal cardboard tag was on their car.
According to Salisbury Police, David Wayne Hastings and his wife, Jessie Lee Hastings, were stopped in the 100 block of North Clay Street about 4 p.m. Their license plate had previously been taken because they had no insurance on the car, a report said.
When the officer asked if there was anything illegal in the car, Jessie Hastings said ěthere might be a pill or two,î the report said.
Police said they found several used hypodermic needles in the 1992 Ford Taurus, along with 30 hydrocodone pills.
The Hastingses, 2430 Woodleaf Barber Road, Cleveland, were both arrested.
David Hastings was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He also had an outstanding warrant for arrest for probation violation.
He was jailed under $1,800 bond.
Jessie Hastings was charged with felony possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She received a $2,500 bond. Both were in jail Friday.
