of losing its moral compass
Is the moral compass of the church showing us the way? Righteousness alone will exalt a nation. Covering up wrongdoing will destroy it.
If the church be God, follow it. But if God is the way, then follow him.
Coach Joe Paterno was fired because of a sex abuse scandal that he didnít do enough to stop. Large churches in our area and on TV are guilty of huge money scams, with some pastors scamming the poor while building multimillion-dollar homes and buying jets. As their bank accounts grow, they fly across the nation preaching ětake what you have and distribute it among the poorî and ěa rich man canít enter heaven.î
Is a part of the Christian church destroying Godís purpose for man? Yes, the light is not too bright as you look into deeper waters. The largest church in the world, based in Rome, recently promoted a priest to pope while the church hierarchy knew that he was aware of the many priests who had molested little boys. Did the pope call the police? I donít think so. Yet he was promoted to head the church. This would be like promoting Joe Paterno to head up the worldís football coaches.
Iím reminded of the poet Josiah Hollandís words, ěGod, give us men! A time like this demands strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands; men whom the lust of office does not kill; men whom the spoils of office cannot buy; men who possess opinions and a will; men who have honour; men who will not lie; men who can stand before a demagogue and damn his treacherous flatteries without winking! Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog in public duty, and in private thinking; for while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds, their large professions and their little deeds, mingle in selfish strife, lo! Freedom weeps, wrong rules the land and waiting justice sleeps.î

In response to Russ Garland’s letter about lack of attention to cleanliness in restaurants, let me add my pet peeve ó fast food counter people who take your money, give you change, then hand you a cup with their fingers down inside it.
While Iím on the subject, I saw one fast food person put on her plastic gloves, scratch her head and then ask if she could take my order.
Whereís the training for these people? I know they donít make much money, but some minimum standards would be appreciated.

Gala reunion for Boyden grads
Saturday evening, Oct. 22, was a very special time for the more than 60 Boyden High School graduates of 1956. The gathering came from all over Rowan County and the United States for the gala event commemorating their 55th anniversary in successfully completing their education. The reunion was held in the Rowan Museumís Messinger Room, which served as the Salisbury Youth Center in the 1950s.
Guests and their spouses were welcomed by class president James Shuler and SGA class president Ned Storey. Before dinner, all guests enjoyed small barbecue sandwiches and Cheerwine as they mixed with classmates not seen since graduation. Afterwards, they enjoyed a sumptuous dinner of chicken, roast beef and a dessert of cake and pie.
The walls were lined with memorabilia: a letter jacket from Boyden, an annual, yellowing newspapers containing information about the athletic teams, especially describing the American Legion baseball teamís journey to the World Series in Minnesota. Also, class pictures were taken.
The attendees honored the deceased members of the Boyden High School Class of 1956, and a pink granite bench had been placed in the museumís garden to commemorate them.
